This team didn't have a perfect record because it lost to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl 24 to 11. A contributing factor was UT losing Cotton Speyrer who was a great receiver got injured and couldn't play and many felt he would have provided us with the passing balance to beat ND in the Cotton Bowl. Nevertheless the UPI awarded UT their National Championship based on the regular season.

They were to have some trials as they had a long winning streak to defend. In the first game they beat California 56 to 15.

Then Texas Tech was beaten 35 to 13.

The next game in Austin was against UCLA and Texas was behind in the last minute 17 to 14. On a fourth and twenty from about the UCLA 45 QB Eddie Phillips threw a pass to Cotton Speyrer who caught it at about the 24. The UCLA pass defender should have gone for the player but went for the ball and Cotton caught it and ran to the endzone for the winning td with about 20 seconds left. Had the receiver went for Cotton he could have caught him even though it would have been a first down but with seconds left the odds would have been in their favor to hold UT out of the endzone. A scare indeed. I was listening to this game on the radio and man you should have heard the stadium erupt when he scored. It was fantastic.

Next UT beat Oklahoma 41 to 9.

Then Rice 45 to 21.

Then SMU 42 to 15. I think this was the game Cotton got hurt and out for the season which was to spell disaster in the ND game. I think he would have given us the passing threat needed to have won that Cotton Bowl game. But that is football.

Then the second scare with Baylor. The game was in Waco and Baylor was determined. One time during the game Baylor made a td but it was called back because of a procedure penalty. Then with UT leading 21 to 14 Baylor made a push in the last minute and reached the UT six yard line but failed to make the td and Texas then ran the clock out. One always wonders if Baylor had scored would they have gone for two. And man the next day the papers made it out that you would have thought UT had lost.

TCU fell next 58 to 0 and then A&M fell 52 to 14.

Then the second shootout with Arkansas was next and Arkansas had the same team that gave Texas a battle the year before but UT made a goal line stand early and then it was a rout as UT won 42 to 7.

This concluded a perfect season and UPI Awarded the NC to Texas. After that year they started to wait till after bowl games like the AP.
