The game was moved up to 1:30 in Austin because of possible bad weather. UT is leading in two of the doubles 5 - 1 and 6 - 1!

In the third doubles match Texas is winning 5 to 2. In tennis you play three doubles matches for one point and whoever wins at least two out of three gets the point. Then there are 6 points available for six singles matches.

The Texas team is rated No. 40 right now. They were rated much higher but they have lately lost matches to No. 11 USC, No. 6 California and No. 4 Stanford.

The updates are slow in coming. I am thinking there might be some rain delay or cancellation. :(

In women's college tennis matches a school wins a match when they get at least four of the seven match points available. That is why the doubles point is so important. If you have the doubles point then you just have to win three of the six singles matches to win. If you don't have the doubles point then you must win at least four of the six singles match to win the whole match.

It looks like play has resumed and Texas has won all three of the doubles matches. Therefore the score is UT 1 Illinois 0. But this isn't official yet.

Tennis takes a while to play...it's likely the pace of play that is causing your delays as they may very well be updating only on changeovers.

It is official now. UT leads 1 - 0. They are about to start the singles matches. Very exciting indeed!

Also in women's college tennis in the doubles matches each match is decided when one group wins 8 games. The singles sets are decided when one player wins 7 games. Six games are enough if a player has at least a two game edge. Remember in the singes you have to win at least two out of three sets. In the doubles one set is enough.

Phil C

In the first set of the singles matches UT is winning all six. We await with baited breath for the results.

UT gets two points as one of the Ilinois players had to retire from a game. It is probably due to an injury. Let's hope it isn't too serious. You hate to get a point like that but with the way the UT player was playing she probably would have got it anyway.

Phil C

Hang on to your hats! UT has won three of the five other first round sets and are starting the second sets. If UT can win two of the second sets of these players they will have four points and cinch the match. Go Lady Horns!

There haven't been any completed games since my last post so alas - there is nothing to report.

Unfortunately another Illinois player retired. She was losing anyway but you still wonder why they retire. I hope it isn't a serious injury. Maybe some tennis players will let us know why a player would retire from a match other than injury. This gives UT a 3 - 1 lead in the match and only needs one more point to win the series.

Also...when playing to 8 games instead of 6 games in a set...it's called a pro set. A normal set is when a player reaches 6 games and is leading by 2 games. They can also win 7-5 but if it reaches 6-6 then a tiebreaker is used and the winner of the tiebreaker (first to 7 points...must win by 2 points) wins the set. That score would be written 7-6 (7-3) with the number in the ()'s showing the tiebreaker score.

Thank you Ad! The good news is that of UT has now won the other first four sets of the four singles matches left.

Tennis in the spring in Austin is a crippling thing...literally. The heat and humidity that overcomes Penick Allison is BRUTAL. Today it's 80 with cloudy skies and 60% humidity. That may not sound bad...but for some reason the air is always so bad around Penick Allison from March-June and A LOT of players will cramp up and be forced to retire. Go watch the state tennis tournament in mid-May. I've seen many a good player have to retire, or even worse, suffer through a match that they should win easily but instead they end up losing while barely being able to walk around the court...let alone compete for a state championship.

A sad situation indeed. :(

UT's Ristine Olson is ahead on her second set 4 to 0. If she can win this set UT cinches the match. Hang on your hat everyone! Excitement indeed!

If she wins...don't expect too many other matches to continue unless they are matches that matter towards individual player rankings (i.e. players in the 1,2 and 3 spots) for regional/national qualifying. If in fact the Illini players are cramping...they will want to get others off the court ASAP. You could also see the UT girls concede any unimportant matches since they have secured the W.

Phil C

UT's Ristine Olson wins her second set 6 to 1 and thus wins the match and gives UT the cinching point as they now lead 4 - 0!

UT wins the match with Illinois even though there are three contested points left.

Way to go Lady Horns!

UT wins the other three singles matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1 and gets the overall 7 - 0 sweep.

Below is UT tennis player Sarah Lancaster.

The UT women's team were ranked No. 21 a month ago but they lost four straight matches to No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 California and No. 11 USC. That is why they have dropped to No. 40.

our women dropped due to injuries, earlier in the year they were top 10 or 15 i think, but they are getting a bit better now that they are getting healthy.....

our men beat Virginia 6-1 this past weekend without our best player playing, we were 5 and Va. was 3, we just need to keep winning and we will have another good run in the NCAAs, maybe even another title...sic'em!

If you're #21 in a sport shouldn't you be expected to lose to #2, #4, and #11?

She's using what's called an "extreme western" forehand grip. For those that can use it...you can generate A LOT of top spin on your strokes. It's a very common grip to see from European players that grew up playing on clay. Most US players use a western or semi-western grip. They are a lot easier to hold and offer more power...but not as much spin. You'd be surprised how much control you can have with that grip though once you get used to it...
