Skywalk's glass made for clarity, durability

The glass used in the new Grand Canyon Skywalk has a connection to French kings and the Palace of Versailles.

The durable, ultraclear glass for the bridge was manufactured by Saint-Gobain, a three-century-old Paris firm that supplied the glass in 1682 for the palace's famed Hall of Mirrors. More recently, Saint-Gobain also made the glass used in the "Pyramid" building at Paris' Louvre museum.

The tempered, laminated Skywalk glass, which is more than two inches thick, was manufactured at a plant in Cologne, Germany. It contains less iron oxide than regular glass, increasing clarity. It's capable of withstanding a magnitude 8.0 earthquake and winds of 100 miles per hour.

Saint-Gobain, the world's largest supplier of building materials including abrasives and ceramics, generated $52 billion in sales last year. It employs 200,000 people worldwide, including 24,000 in the U.S. and Canada, many in the company's CertainTeed subsidiary.

What a great way to collect sacrifices for the god of the canyon.:D

They charge $10 to let you on it---and $100 to let you come off. :D

I saw this thing under construction a little over a month ago. I wish it would have been open then. IT looks fantastic and I cant wait to go back. That alone would worth the $25 entry fee just to drive into the park.

I'm kind of disappointed. I guess I thought the skywalk would connect to the other side. I still wouldn't get on it.

but i still wouldnt get on it unless i designed it myself....and id still carry an opened parachute

:D

The engineers could just line the guardrails with umbrellas. Perfect to block out the sun, and can save a falling man or woman in a pinch ala Marry Poppins. :D

A stable structure could be built...it would just take a lot of steel...and a lot of triangles! ;)

Same here...I can just imagine it and get a bit quesy. My instinct would be to drop to my hands and knees to crawl, if I were actually on it (like that would make a damn bit of difference while I was in the process of having a heart attack). :nerd:

Way, way too scary for me!

I read another article that mentioned the charge to walk it was gonna be $74.95.
I'd love to try it but that's too expensive.:(

I am scared poop-less of heights!! I can't even get on the first step of a ladder without getting queasy! I think it's great for the people that want to do it, but not me.

HELL NO!!! I hate heights, I was at the JFK museum in Dallas a few years back and looking out that window made me feel sick as it is much less damn near in mid air of the Grand Canyon.
