New West Texas Relay record set by Panthers

The Fort Stockton boys mile relay team was three-tenths of a second from earning a medal at the UIL Class 3A Track and Field Championships last year.

With two of those runners back, the Panthers are hoping for greater things this season and a sign of things to come was built Saturday.
The Panthers set a new West Texas Relays Division II boys record, winning the 1,600-meter relay in three minutes, 22.38 seconds.

Sam Franklin and Adrian Nevarez are the two holdovers from the state qualifying mile-relay team and Franklin was a big reason why the Panthers won Saturday.

After falling behind by 30 meters to Midland Christian after the first leg, Franklin took the baton and blew into first place and opened up a five-meter lead.

Desi Urias ran the first leg and Jonathan Pacheco ran the third on the record-setting relay.

Franklin also won the 800 in a time of 2:00.47, blowing out the field..
