It is not sure but Lonnie Leer was a robber who roamed around the southwest from California to Texas in the 1880s to 1890s. He was a black man and was very fast and accurate with a gun. He stayed within about 50 miles of the Mexican border. He would go into a town and rob a local grocery store and then go across the border where he could live cheaply and well for a while. He always robbed local Hispanic or Black stores which is why the white peace officers didnt' pursue him too much. He never got much money of course but back then with just a few dollars one could go to Mexico and stay at a boarding hourse/bar cheepy and have enough tequella to drink for a while. Among the poor stores he robbed he was called Leery Lonnie also. He did this several years. Sometimes the store owner would foolish resist and to their eternal sorrow found that Lonnie Leer was a good shot. Some of the mercants along the border put up a $50 reward which wasn't much but it was bound to attrack some interesting bounty hunters. It did.

One of them was Flejos (pronounced Fla hos) Bill who was good with a shotgun. He noticed Lonnie Leer in one of the Mexican towns near the New Mexico Border. Flejos Bill was a young man (He had a Hispanic mother and a Father who was from England). When Lonnie Leer ran out of money he went across the border to do one of his robberies. He was closely followed by Flejos Bill who was determined to get him in the act so he could easily claim the $50 reward. He waited around the corner as Lonnie Leer went in to rob the store. When Lonnie Leer came out Flejos Bill jumped out from behind the corner and took dead aim on Lonnie Leer. Leer was observant and fast and got off a shot at the same time Flejos Bill fired. The shotgun blast was effective though as it hit Lonnie Leer and he fell hard and was killed instantly. But his shot fatally wounded Flejos Bill who was taken to a local doctor but he died a couple of hours later.

Thus ended the legend of Lonnie Leer. It is still talked about around border towns.

One thing ASU is that Lonnie Leer never killed anyone except in self defense. Of course he did it while he was in the act of committing a crime.

Here's a little story 'bout Lonnie Leer
was runnin' round one day lookin' for beer
couldn't find none cheap so he had an idea (pronounced idear)
put a gun to the bartender's ear

Lonnie boy get yourself straight
Lonnie boy better get out of the states
Lonnie boy don't come round no more
Lonnie boy why ya killin' for

Well Lonnie Leer he needed some food
didn't wanna beg because he thought it was rude
but he kept a knife hidden in his right boot
he ran as fast as he could to the border with his loot

Lonnie boy get yourself straight
Lonnie boy better get out of the states
Lonnie boy don't come round no more
Lonnie boy why ya killin' for

Well Lonnie Leer needed him some new clothes
but he figured this time he'd better use some dough
but the money wasn't there ya work was slow
so he went to the bank left 'em lyin' on the floor

Lonnie boy get yourself straight
Lonnie boy better get out of the states
Lonnie boy don't come round no more
Lonnie boy why ya killin' for

Well Lonnie Leer yah he met his match
tryin' to steal cotton from a cotton patch
the bounty was decent enough to scratch
and dead lie Lonnie yah what a catch

Lonnie boy get yourself straight
Lonnie boy better get out of the states
Lonnie boy don't come round no more
Lonnie boy why ya killin' for

It is rumored that Lonnie Leer once in a while went to see the bullfights and boxing matchings while he was south of the border.

On a sad note Flejos Bill wanted the $50 to buy a ring and get a start with a young girl named Maria. There was a good friend of the family that offered him a job with the Nuevo Laredo police department and he was going to accept that after his honeymoon with Maria. It was said he was planning to take her to visit the Solar de La Plaza in Juarez but his death prevented this.
Devastated Maria decided to serve God and became a nun and lived to have a long life of service in the Catholic Church. The only free time she had was on Thursday where she nearly always went to watch movies. Ironically the last movie she saw two days before her death was the American movie "The Nun's Story" (dubbed in Spanish of course) with Audrey Hepburn. It was a great life but it was also a shame she didn't get to have her life with Flejos Bill. He could have got by without that $50.
