Gainesville wins first state crown
By SCOTT McDONALD / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Bells sounded, horns blew and thousands of fans jumped and cheered as Gainesville won the Class 3A Division I state championship Saturday at Texas Stadium.

Gainesville completed its perfect season by coming from behind in the fourth quarter to knock off No. 1 Burnet, 35-24.

Junior running back Terrius Purvey rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns to pace Gainesville (15-0), which won its first football state title after finishing runner-up in 1978, 1976 and 1974.

Burnet (14-1) trailed, 28-24, in the fourth quarter but drove the field and threatened to score and take the lead. Burnet senior quarterback Stephen McGee, who has orally committed to Texas A&M, mishandled a snap that Gainesville sophomore Clint Stoffels recovered.

On the ensuing drive, Gainesville quarterback Chris Brown connected with Amos Berryman on a 26-yard pass to get into Burnet territory. Brown then had a run of 37 yards before scampering 15 yards to put Gainesville ahead for good with 1:37 remaining.

The talk of Burnet was the quarterback-receiver tandem of McGee and Jordan Shipley. Shipley didn't disappoint as he caught six pass for 120 yards and one touchdown.

Shipley returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. He received the ball at the 13, faked a handoff to a teammate and raced through a big hole and down the left side of the field to give Burnet a 6-0 lead just 11 seconds into the game.

With Gainesville ahead, 7-6, late in the first quarter, Shipley caught a 50-yard pass from McGee to put Burnet ahead, 14-7.

Gainesville used a stingy defense loaded with blitz packages and double coverage on receivers to keep a 450 yard-a-game Burnet offense out of sync. Gainesville sophomores Michael Miller and Jeremy Franklin combined with Stoffels and the rest of the Gainesville defense to hold Burnet to just three points in the second half.

Brown finished with 92 yards rushing and two second-half touchdowns.

Many Everman fans were part of the announced attendance of 16,211. Former Everman defensive back Corey Fulbright, who injured his spinal cord in Everman's state championship win over Burnet last season, was honored at halftime by Burnet. Fulbright sat on the sidelines with five Everman players at his side. All were there to cheer for Burnet, which missed out on its first state title.
