Before the 1980s the Major Bowls were 4 which were the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. The Rose Bowl was the Granddaddy of them all because it was the first one with it's first game in 1902 when Michigan beat Stanford 49 to 0. Before the late 60s the bowl games didn't figure in the National Championship picture because they were considered exhibition games and the teams weren't considered to even be at their best due to the long time of about a month or more between them. These games were played on January1 each year and teams wanted to play in these four major bowls. They always played on January 1 of each year except when it was on a Sunday and then it was played on January 2.

In football UT (Texas) has played in all four major bowls. As one would expect they have played in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas many times with an 11-10-1 record. Bear in mind that if you win at least half or more of the bowl games it is considered very good because you are playing teams that are close to your level. UT won the first Cotton Bowl they played in on January 1, 1943 beating Georgia Tech 14 to 7. Other notable Cotton Bowl victories were against Navy in 1964 by 28 to 6 and Notre Dame in 1970 by 21 to 17.

Texas did perfect in the Orange Bowl in Miami with a 2 - 0 - 0 record beating Georgia in 1949 41 to 28 and No. 1 alabama in 1965 21 to 17.

Texas does not have that good a record in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans with a 1-2-0 record. They did beat Alabama in 1948 27 to 7 but lost to Mississippi in 1958 39 to 7 and Virginia Tech in 1995 28 to 10.

Texas is perfect in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena (near Los Angelas) with a 2 - 0 - 0 record beating Michigan in 2005 38 to 37 and USC in 2006 41 to 38 which gave them the 2005 National Championship.

As an added note of interest UT is 1 - 4 against USC in football. The teams haven't got to meet much and USC has won them all but one but what a one that UT won that gave them the National Championship. Talk about perfect timing. :)

Austin- 1st game played there in 1894 a 38-0 win for the horns.

San Antonio- 1st game played there in 1899 a 6-0 win for the horns.

Dallas- 1st game played in 1907 which was also the first tie of the series, 0-0.

Houston- 1st game played in 1908. In the years when the two universities would play eachother twice a year.
