Not like I'm a volunteer fan or anything but thats some info I had just wondered about out of the blue. The thread title was a just a friendly poke at another worn-out one of the same name. :D

Tennessee actually won it in 1998 rather than 1997. It was the year after Payton Manning graduated. They had the top recruiting football class four years earlier and they were able win it all when they were seniors.
The 1951 team won the MNC by the AP and UPI. This was for the regular season. Back then since the bowl games weren't taken seriously and were mainly considered exhibition games because due to a month or longer layoff between games the teams were not considered to be at their best. That team lost to Maryland in the Orange Bowl (I think) by the score of 28 to 13. But they still got the MNC based on the regular season which was the custom back then.

The only thing I actually remembered was that Peyton didnt win one. It was a shame he didnt have just one more year, but I guess the ring he has now means more.
