Just two weeks after dropping a 14-1 decision to Rice, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fared much better the second time around in a game against the nation’s eighth-ranked team falling 2-1 on Sunday at the Whataburger College Classic.

“We keep putting ourselves in situations to win against quality programs and we will get one eventually,” said Islander interim head coach Gene Salazar. “We got a very good pitching performance from Omar. When we get a performance like we did from Omar, we need to do a better job of executing to get the final run across.”

The Islanders belted out nine hits and got a solid pitching performance from Omar Gutierrez but they could not put across another run. A&M-Corpus Christi hit into a season-high four double plays on offense in falling to 12-9 with their fourth-straight loss.

Gutierrez suffered his first loss of the season despite allowing just two runs on seven hits. Brian Anderson and Trey Maldonado continued the strong effort on the mound giving up one hit in 1-2/3 innings of work.

Pinch hitter Jared Gayhart led off the top of the eighth inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by Brian Friday moved him into scoring position, Gayhart scored from second on a one-out base hit by Diego Seastrunk breaking a 1-1 tie.

Rice broke the 0-0 tie with a run in the top of the fourth. Tyler Henley led off the inning with a single and stole second. He scored on a double to left by Savery with no outs.

The Islanders responded in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at one. Martin Parra led off the inning by lining a double to left. After moving to third on a single by Trae Williams, Parra tallied as Chase Wheaton hit into a double play.

The Islanders had base runners in all but one inning but were unable to get a second run across. The team hit into a season-high four double plays as the Owls also set a season-best in double plats turned.

Savery, who also was Rice’s starting pitcher, allowed one run on five hits in four innings of work. He walked three and fanned two. He gave way to Ryne Tacker who tossed five innings of shutout baseball to get his second win of the season.

Three A&M-Corpus Christi players finished with two hits as Trae Williams, Chase Wheaton, and Jason Graham each had a pair. The team stranded seven runners in the contest. Seastrunk, Savery and Henley each had two hits for the Owls.

The Islanders will look for a return to the win column on Wednesday at they visit Prairie View for a doubleheader.

Even though Buzz didn't get the win, he is doing very well and we are all very proud of him!! It sure is nice to see our home town boys doing so well!! I'm just sorry I missed it. :(

Sounded like a hell of a game. The Islanders can hang with the big boys, but little mistakes(or mental errors, whatever you want to call them) keep bringing them down.

Is the basketball karma rubbing off on the baseball team?

What happened to that real good pitcher that CC Moody had a year or so ago when they won the state title. I dont remember his name but he started for Moody since he was a freshman. Is he playing college ball anywhere?
