I am not 100% sure, but I believe a U.S. citizen should need only valid I.D. I am on the border right now, but the details of this latest legislation has not completely trickled down yet. I do think that they were pressing for passprts all the way around to happen eventually. I just think your good for now.

I can ask rundoe, or maybe he'll get on and can answer. He regularly goes back & forth.

All you need this year is a valid ID, as long as you are driving or walking across. If you are flying or on a boat you need a passport. Beginning next year, you will need a passport to re-enter the US from any foreign country.

You are correct, walking or driving, dont need a passport. Jan 23 of next year is when you will need one regardless

I believe on the new year it is now required to have a passport to go back and forth. Be careful in those border towns, not a good place to be visiting now a days.

I'm not sure what you need to get into Mexico, but to get back all you need to do is find a hole in the fence or make sure that you know how to swim.

Maybe large groups driving across have different rules. I asked about it because I'm thinking about roadtripping down to the Pacific Coast this week and regular tourists driving across won't need one until next January.

We went to Acuna a few weeks ago and didn't need a passport but I asked la migra about it because I heard rumors you did but until January 1st you can still drive back and forth without. If you are flying then you have to have one and in 2008 you will anytime you leave the country.

You can drive or walk across with just your ID until next year. if you fly you need a passport. Progresso is safe. I go there about once a month.
