Good news for Wylie. 6-5 Cory Davis is back at center. He went down early in the regional semis and missed the finals as well.

It helps to "hop around" between the quarter option, the game status, and team stats on there to get better score updates. No radio for you?

It is so hard for these guys to find their shot in this arena esp if they are used to palying in a little gym. The Wylie girls struggled against Marion last year early.

Same thing my senior year for the girls vs H-J. We were down 25+ at half and came back to win.

Wylie 8
AP 6

End of 1st Quarter

It sounds like Wylie is using the same "ball control" offense from the 2nd half of the Bfield game to get the players into the game and making a lot of good, safe passes.

Damn straight. What sucks is that we usually compete as good or better with the eventual State Champs than the other team the champs play in the Finals. Our big thing is that we can't win the big one when we're given the chance. A few years ago, AP lost to Gainesville (who smoked the other team in the state championship) by a couple. Then they hung in there with Van, but couldn't pull it out. We're going to get that rep forever until we finally prove that we can win the big one.

Oh well. Aransas had what, 17 losses or something, and they gave the number one team in the state a run for their money.

From what I've heard, AP was a tale of two different teams this year. The team they had during the regular season was nothing compared to the monster that went through the playoffs.

I don't know anything about Wylie, but I know that H-J is very beatable. It took some luck, some timely turnovers, and a huge discipline problem for them to upend Silsbee. Not saying that they can't realistically take it, just saying that I think the two teams are probably close to even.

HJ is going to win on Saturday unless they have a colossal meltdown. No way they lose to a team that struggled against a Region IV school.

I can't prove you wrong personally. I'm a horrible basketball player. But maybe one of these teams will.

Let's check out the scores from the past few years, just for good measure.

2001
Semis: West Oso over Dimmitt, 45-21
Finals: Mexia over WO, 74-49
*I think this is where you base most of your argument. And it's a fair argument. Mexia edged out Gainesville (the '02 State Champs... Almost everyone on this GV squad were underclassmen) on the other side of the Semis.

2002
Semis: Gainesville over Aransas Pass, 71-68
Finals: Gainesville over Kountze, 79-62

2003
Not much to hang our hat on here. Everman spanked both AP and the Region 2 champs (Tatum) equally bad. Both lost by 28. Oh, and the Region III reps that year (Hempstead) was essentially the same team AP beat the year before in the Region IV Tourney. Brought back almost all of their starters.

2004
Again, got spanked. West Oso lost to Kountze by 23. Kountze then beat Midland Greenwood by 19 in the Finals.

2005
Semis: Van over AP, 61-51... Tied at the end of the 3rd, but AP got outscored 20-10 in the final frame.
Finals: Van over Graham, 62-41... It was never close.

2006
Semis: Roosevelt over Stafford (now a R3 team), 67-55
Finals: Roosevelt over Carrollton Ranchview, 61-46

2007
???????

BTW, your argument is off. It's not just R4, it's everyone outside of D/FW. Let's check out the last 15 state champs...

2006 Dallas Roosevelt (D/FW)
2005 Van (NE Texas... R2)
2004 Kountze (Golden Triangle... R3)
2003 Everman (D/FW)
2002 Gainesville (D/FW)
2001 Mexia (Waco area)
2000 Waco LaVega (R3)
1999 Mexia
1998 Clarksville (NE Texas)
1997 Dallas Madison (D/FW)
1996 Sinton (CC Area... R4)
1995 Clarksville
1994 Ferris (D/FW)
1993 SLC (D/FW)
1992 Stafford (South of Houston... R4)

That makes six of the last 15 state champs from the Metroplex. And only three of these 15 state champs (Kountze, Sinton, and Stafford) were more than an hour and a half drive from the Metroplex.

It's not that R4 is absolutely horrible, it's that D/FW teams are just that much better than the rest of the state. Just look at the scores. Go watch a couple of State Tournaments that don't pit two D/FW teams against each other.

Has R3 or R1 competed better against D/FW? Houston area? Austin area? Anyone?

JR2004
03-08-2007, 08:11 PM
I base my argument off of ELEVEN years of almost completely awful basketball out of region IV in 3A. Unless the region boundary lines shift dramatically, Sinton will be the only team I'll ever see from Region IV win a state title in boys basketball.

In turn though, it'd also be fair to say that there's a darn good chance I'll never see Madison be able to break through in football and beat any of the country towns to get deep into the playoffs. There's a certain limit to how far Madison can get just like there's a certain limit as to how far a school from AP's neck of the woods is going to go in basketball.

This is what a coach told me in high school who grew up with Billy Clyde and coached with him when he was still a high school coach. He said anytime you're in a region with valley schools in it you're in a weak region. If it wasn't for the astronomical cost of pulling it off, I'd be completely in favor of seeing the whole field seeded 1-96. However that's not realistic money-wise or travel-wise so that'll never come to pass.

I wouldn't really consider Gainesville part of the Metroplex. They are a bit of an anomaly for the area they are in. They usually have some darn good athletes, but I've never considered them part of the Metroplex. The problem here is that Region I has at least shown some ability to compete when they get their shot at the teams from 2 and 3...Madison's state title came at the expense of Tulia. Tulia gave them all they wanted throughout most of that game. Greenwood steamrolled Gainesville when they played.

You know some regions are better at certain things than other regions...I'm sure there are plenty of other sports that Region IV is really, really good at and excel at on a statewide level. They seem to have some pretty good teams in football and baseball.

However that's not realistic money-wise or travel-wise so that'll never come to pass.
I think it would be awesome if they could just seed everyone and let it play out. Unfortunately, like you said, unless Bill Gates decides to sponsor the playoffs, it won't happen. And Bill doesn't look like much of a sports fan.

But at the same time, the Region 4 champs have been able to compete with the Region 3 and Region 1 champs just about every year. We tend to have problems against D/FW, but usually match up nicely against just about everyone else. In the last five years, only Gainesville/Mexia in 2001 and Everman in 2003 have completely outclassed R4 teams. But then again, they outclassed everyone else, too. If I remember correctly, I think Pittsburg was the only team to play Everman within 10 throughout the playoffs.

I think your coach was exaggerating a little about R4. Sure, the Valley has a hard time producing good hoops teams, but South Houston, Victoria, Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi do just fine. Like I said, it's usually either a District 30 team (Corpus Christi area) or Stafford (South Houston) representing the Region, but they usually perform well. Maybe if 30-3A and the S. Houston district (Stafford, West Columbia, etc.) weren't as tough top to bottom, some of our teams could run up their records a little more and get better seeding at State.

But like I said, until we win another one we'll never get that monkey off our back.

R4 hasn't had the R2 and R3 depth at football lately, but the cream of the crop is alright. It just depends on realignment. This year, R4 lost a lot of the Houston- and Austin-area teams and don't have nearly as many schools, so we're definitely not as deep.

It's the same way with hoops. The Victoria district, Corpus Christi district, and the South Houston district were typically strong top to bottom. Then you had other teams from SA, Austin, etc who would fill out the cream of the crop and make the playoffs interesting.

But I can't think of a single 3A team from down South that's been on that "elite" level that Gainesville, Mexia, Everman, Roosevelt, etc have been on. The year that Van won (well, from what I heard) seemed like a bit of a down year. Van, AP, and a few other teams were better than the usual supporting cast, but you didn't have that one or two elites (like Gainesville and Mexia back in '01) at the top of the pile.

2003 Everman basketball playoffs

area vs. Vernon W 90-37
Reg. Qtrs vs. Abilene Wylie W 54-42
Reg. Semis vs. Midland Greenwood W 65-54
Reg Finals vs. Decatur W 82-43
State Semis vs. Aransas Pass W 86-58
State Champ vs. Tatum W 72-44

So actually no one was within 10 of Everman in that playoff run..LOL good times

I'll agree that there isn't much depth in football, but Wimberley is holding a state chamionship trophy and Cuero came oh so close the year before.

The year Van won it was a down year for 3A, but they did have a pretty good team. Jermie Calhoun was the 6th man as a freshman for them and they liked to run and were pretty entertaining to watch despite how weak their competition was that year.

Region IV hasn't had a team down there like any of those you've mentioned so I'd agree with you there. However I can't put the elite label on any of the teams you've mentioned. Extremely, extremely good is as far as I'll go. I reserve the elite label for one team and that's the 97 Madison team. I haven't seen one 3A team down there since I started going in 96 that could've beaten the 97 Trojans. That was the most loaded 3A team there has been in my lifetime. Not Gainesville, not Everman and not Kountze could've knocked those guys off. They were just amazing to watch and there's been nothing like them in 3A since.

Great game and great season Panthers! No one expected you to get this far. I know you guys busted your tails to prove the doubters wrong and even though the Panthers came up a few points short, it defintely wasn't the "bye" game that some on here had predicted. Ask anyone from Abilene Wylie if today was a "gimme".........
You guys showed that despite the mediocre record, and the fact that you're from South Texas and no one respects you, that you without a doubt belonged in Austin today.

Once again, congrats to Coach Hayes and crew on a great season!

Sinton 84- Jourdanton 35
Sinton 65- George West 44
Sinton 59- Luling 49
Sinton 69- West Oso 56
Sinton 54- Hempstead 49
Sinton 66- Graham 59

Never really felt like Graham was in that game. Mayo hit big shot after big shot all game long to keep Graham from ever making a comeback.

There was a Mayo from Sinton? There is a big group of Mayo's in Graham as well. I wonder if any of those boys were on that Graham team.
