Wallace Breaks Squat School Record at Night of Champions
For Immediate Release
Wednesday, March 7, 2007

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M senior-to-be Cody Wallace, a first-team All Big 12 offensive center, set the all-time school record in the squat with a lift of 740 pounds to highlight the evening at the Aggie football team’s Night of Champions on Wednesday.

Wallace rocked the G. Rollie White Coliseum crowd by breaking his own school record four times on the evening. Wallace’s record stood at 680 pounds coming into the event, but he quickly bettered it with lifts of 685, 700 and 720 before failing at 745 pounds. With the final lift of the exhibition, Wallace pushed up 740 pounds to the delight of the crowd.

“This was something I’ve really been looking forward to for several months,” Wallace said. “It’s going to be nice to see my name on the top of the squat list. Hopefully it will stay up there for a while, but we’ve got a lot of pretty strong kids coming up.”

Another bonus from Wallace’s record is that it allowed him to tie junior-to-be defensive end Michael Bennett for the coveted Iron Man award for the “light linemen” (sub-300 pounds). The Iron Man is determined by taking the total weight from the squat, bench press and hang clean and dividing by body weight.

Other Iron Man winners were: defensive back Japhus Brown (sub-195 pound skill players), running back Cornell Tarrant (195-plus skill), linebacker Misi Tupe (stand-up players) and offensive tackle Corey Clark (300-plus pounds).

It was also a big night for junior-to-be safety Devin Gregg who broke his own defensive backs record in the bench press. Gregg’s mark stood at 410 coming into the night, but he bettered it with lifts of 420, 430 and eventually 440 pounds.

Also breaking a position record was defensive back David Latham, who took down Melvin Bullitt’s old record of 363 pounds in hang clean with an impressive lift of 374.5 pounds. Latham had to hold off Japhus Brown, who also took a crack at 374.5 pounds.

In an exciting vertical leap competion, three Aggies hit the 40-inch plateau – cornerback Jordan Peterson (42 inches), safety Chevar Bryson (40) and defensive end Cyril Obiozor (40.5)

In the two-man tug of war competitions, LB Mark Dodge defeated TE Andrew Key, OL Robbie Frost out-pulled DL Henry Smith and LB Anthony Lewis beat RB Ryan O’Bryant.

In all, 18 of the 20 lifters established personal bests at the 2007 Night of Champions:

WoW, some strong ones. We just tested out here at TLU and I did OK... could have did better if I applied myself during the offseason more... but I mean it isn't called "off" season for no reason :)
