I believe that Old Cardinal is probably the oldest. He told us last year that he was 60. I'm right behind him at 56.

If you go through Portland it is longer. wink Not that it matters, but official mileage is from center of town to center of town, not city limit to city limit. It is 28 miles from the center of Sinton to the center of Corpus Christi no matter which direction you take. If both towns are county seats, the mileage is courthouse to courthouse. Or at least it used to be that way. But, like I said it doesn't really matter.

I am fortunate to still have 20/20 vision (both parents in their 60's and neither have to have any vision correction yet) but...I still don't want to have to change the resolution on my computer and have everything reduced in size!!

I'm right on Old Card's tail in age.......thus the "old" in my post name. At least we post date leather helmets and did have face "guards" (of a sort). AND I'm old enough to have played a little Single Wing formation football.

That's not all that old. I watched Gorman run the single wing in the playoffs in 84 or 85.

Just kidding, I really enjoy reading your post on here. If you get a chance tomorrow, come out to Orangefield and check out the finals of the basketball tournament. The girls final is OF and WOS starting at 3:00. Should be a great game. The boys final is OF and LCM. I think LCM may be a little too strong for OF.

By the way everyone I'm 29.

Sorry to shoot old card out of the saddle, but I am past 63. I was a 145 pound nose gaurd and
offensive right guard for the DeRidder Dragons, 1958. I was a teenager before we got electricity.
How's that for OLD? eek!

Boy Fred, I sure am glad to here from you. When any statistics are given, say on teacher pay, per capita income, etc:-the folks from Arkansas who were always 49th would say "Thank God for Mississippi!"...Well a guess, I will say "Thank God for Fred G.!" I enjoy your contributions Fred. I remember back several years ago-we had to start something obscure or controversial, just to keep the message board alive and kicking in the off seasons.

Thanks, Old Card. But as for starting something several years ago, couldn't of been me. I only got signed up last year. We have those senior moments, don't we? :D But I gotta give you credit for keeping this board going, and last year there was some stuff I got into during the play-offs.
Did your son play for Bridge City?

Old Cardinal
12-13-2003, 12:33 PM
Yes Fred, my son and my son-in-law played for Bridge City, just as I did. My grandson did also but he was hit by a hit-and-run driver and left for dead. He recovered but has a crushed knee that finally kept him out of football...I had nephews that played for Orangefield, one was quite a star back around 1965....Fred, I have talked to several people that played for Newton back during WWII in the game at DeRidder when the stands full of Fort Polk soldiers began to sway and the whole wooden stands collapsed, by laying over sideways. It is interesting- except for two ladies that received broken legs, there were no other injuries....We never played DeRitter, when I was a kid; but we did play Leesville once in football.

Old Card, I haven't thought about that Newton-DeRidder game in a long time. I heard about it when I was growing up, a lot of jokes mostly. The only time DeRidder and Newton got together when I was playing was preseason scrimmages. We could handle them pretty well then. DeRidder's football fortunes have hit the skids in recent years.

I have probably seen your son and son-in-law play, depending on what years they played. My son played left tackle for Jasper in the '83, and '84 seasons. That was when we had Reggie Davis and Tony Allen (the fastest man in the state in the 1/4 mi). I have seen most of the BC/Jasper games since 1980. Always impressed with BC's ability to improve greatly from jr. high to Varsity and give us a real game.

Your grandson had it pretty tough. Hope he is doing well in all other phases of his life.
