SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

The second annual Mira's Bayfront Bash softball tournament also wrapped up Saturday, as defending District 31-4A champion Tuloso-Midway came away with the gold division title. The Cherokees outlasted New Braunfels on Saturday, 1-0 in the gold division championship game at Cabaniss Field, while Moody edged Kingsville, 1-0 in the third-place game. T-M slipped past the Trojans, 3-0 in the semifinals, while New Braunfels and Kingsville played to a scoreless tie with New Braunfels advancing due to getting more runners to third base to win the tiebreaker.

Sinton, meanwhile, used a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 3-2 victory over San Marcos in the championship game of the silver division at King High School

Tuloso-Midway won the PLATINUM & Sinton won the GOLD.

Moody walks off with Mira's
Touted Trojans claim baseball title

Not even a cold day in Corpus Christi could stop Moody from winning its second straight Mira's Baseball Classic title Saturday.

The state-ranked Trojans used a three-run second inning to erase an early one-run deficit en route to a 5-2 victory over Pflugerville in the championship game of the fourth annual Mira's Baseball Classic on a chilly night for baseball Saturday at Cabaniss Field.

Moody - No.2 in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A state rankings this season after reaching the state semifinals in Class 5A last year - improved to 12-0 with the victory.

"This tournament is really special to us and we take a lot of pride in winning it," said Trojans coach Corky Gallegos, whose team travels to play Class 4A non-district rival Robstown at 7 p.m. Monday. "It also helps prepare us for the rest of the season."

"Moody is a good team and they just outplayed us today," said Panthers coach Don Fry, whose defending District 15-5A champion team reached the Class 5A area playoffs last year. "They have strong pitching and they play good defense - they turned three double plays against us tonight."

Moody junior left-handed pitcher Marc Gomez (2-0) benefited from the Trojans' impressive defense Saturday, as he scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs in seven innings to pick up the victory. Gomez walked five, hit a batter and struck out eight.

"Marc Gomez did a great job today and we're real satisfied with where our pitching is at right now," Gallegos said. "They're really an inexperienced staff, but you wouldn't know it by watching them this year. Our pitching coach Mike Leal does a great job with them."

The Panthers (9-4) struck for a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead on Tyler Gipson's two-out infield single that scored Eric Staha, who walked.

Moody countered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off Pflugerville starting pitcher Keneth Stockton to forge ahead, 3-1.

Rudy Grande started Trojans' the rally with a two-run double down the right-field line to score Jacob Perales and Thomas Tovar, who both walked. Rudy Flores, who was hit by a pitch, later scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring in that frame.

The Panthers threatened in the third inning thanks to Blake Kelso's one-out double. Moody shortstop Andrew Perez helped put a stop to that Pflugerville rally, as Perez went far to his left to retrieve Greg Garcia's chopper up the middle before throwing to the first baseman Flores to record the second out of the inning. Gomez then retired the final batter of the inning on a slow grounder to second baseman Joey Mendoza to strand the senior Kelso (who Fry said will play baseball for the University of Houston next season) at third base.

Gomez also pitched around Taylor Parcus' leadoff single for the Panthers in the fourth inning by striking out the next three batters looking. He fanned six through the first four innings.

He then got out of bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fifth inning by retiring the final batter of that frame on a fielder's choice ground ball to Trojans third baseman Ronnie Flores.

Moody added two insurance runs in the fifth inning on Gabriel Morales' (who was 2 for 3 in the game) double to right-center field that scored Mendoza (who singled and moved into scoring position on Perez' sacrifice bunt) and Jacob Perales' single to left field that plated Morales.

Taking advantage of Mendoza's key infield single and a throwing error earlier in the day, the Trojans used a two run, fifth inning to slip past McAllen (8-2), 2-1 in Saturday's semifinals. The junior pitcher Morales notched the win after a strong outing in which he yielded just one earned run on four hits. Pflugerville, meanwhile, handed King its first loss of the tournament, 5-2 in the other semifinal game to reach the championship game.

Robstown pitcher Ricky Mendez threw a two-hit shut out to help the Cotton Pickers knock off Carroll, 8-0 in Saturday's third-place game. Trey Hernandez's three-run home run to left field in the fourth inning helped put the finishing touches on the Robstown victory, while Chris Contreras also helped the Cotton Pickers' cause with two hits and an RBI.
