Does anyone (44IAR) know if Cuero ended up winning the St. Joseph golf classic? I know they were up a stroke on 3 time defending champ CCKing.

Cuero may have been a little shaky Saturday, but St. Joseph was right on the mark as two new winners were crowned at the 2007 St. Joseph Spring Classic.

Cuero found scoring challenging in the cool, north wind that blew throughout the day at Colony Creek Country Club, but so did most of the other teams, especially Corpus Christi King, who had won the tournament the last three years.

But consistency, especially from the Gobblers top-three golfers, paid off with a nine-shot victory over the defending champions. Cuero compiled a final-round 331 to go with its opening 315 to finish at 646, while King, just a stroke behind the Gobblers at the start of the day, fired a 339 to finish at 655.

Memorial went on to take third with a 328-334-662, while Corpus Christi Calallen was fourth with a 339-332-671. King's B-team finished fifth with a 348-336-648 and Gregory-Portland (346-351-697) was sixth, while Yoakum jumped to spots to take seventh with a 374-340-714. Host St. Joseph was eighth with a 369-350-719.

On the girl's side, the St. Joseph Lady Flyers ended Yoakum's two-year reign after closing with an impressive 329 final round. Scrambling four scores in the 80s with a 74, the Lady Flyers finished the two-day event with a 678, easily outdistancing itself from Yoakum who finished at 363-340-703.

Sarah Davis paced the Lady Flyers capturing individual honors for the second straight year with an 80-74-154. Teammate Bethany Longoria finished third with an 81-87-168 and Abbey Janssen was fifth with a 90-83-173. Christina Pfister added a 100-85-185 and Ashton Crocker a 98-88-186.

"The scores were really fabulous today," Lady Flyers coach Jack Lee said. "I never thought we would have to throw out a score in the 80s. This is just wonderful."

Ashley Chumchal, who was second medalist, paced Yoakum with an 82-80-162, while Hope Koenning was fourth with an 87-83-170. Helice Migl added a 91-85-176, Brittany Miears a 103-92-195 and DeeAnn Stastny a 103-109-212.

Edna finished third with a 383-407-790, with Memorial fourth at 429-404-833 and Gregory-Portland fifth at 448-439-887.

Austin Griffin, who won medalist honors last year, turned in two runs of 79 to finish as second medalist on a scorecard playoff and pace Cuero with a 158. Steven Bell was just as consistent with an 81-80-161, while Donavon Sanchez added an 85-81-166.

Kevin Iraggi and Gabe Villarreal, who opened among the leaders, struggled but were able to keep the Gobblers in contention for the title. After an opening-round 77, Iraggi carded a 93 Saturday t finish at 170, while Villarreal added a 91 to his 78 for a 169.

"Austin, Stephen and Donavon really came through especially with all the penalty strokes that had early," Gobblers coach John Fuqua said. "What's good about it, is that all three were down but when they found out they had won it pepped them up."

Gregory-Portland's Dylan Davis took individual honors with a 77-76-153, while Memorial's Aaron Christensen tied with Griffin with a 79-79-158.

Way to go Gobblers !
