Mavericks outlasted in extra innings by Baylor Bears

Carrillo Strikes Out Five in Three Innings

The baseball team put up seven runs but lost out to the Bears on Tuesday.

UTA traveled to Waco on Tuesday to face the Baylor Bears, eventually losing 9-7 in extra innings.

It took the Bears 10 innings to beat the Mavs

A scoreless ninth from the Bears allowed the Mavs another opportunity to score. UTA brought one run across in the tenth, improving the score to 7-6, but PJ Burns gave up two home runs in the bottom of the inning, which, along with a walk, added three points to Baylor’s score.

“It was a good ballgame,” associate head coach Darin Thomas said. “Our guys kept us in the game.”

Burns was charged with the loss after pitching the ninth and 10th innings.

Both UTA and Baylor showcased offense as the Mavs put up eight hits and the Bears put up 10.

The Mavs committed just one error that led to a Baylor score compared to Baylor’s three. Baylor, however, was able to produce when it mattered.

The Mavs loaded the bases in the tenth as Mitch Putman sliced one to the second baseman to bring a score in. They scored only one and left two on base to end the inning.

When Baylor came to bat in the bottom half they faced a must win situation. The Bear’s designated hitter hit the first of the home runs, tying the game at 7-7. Burns then walked the next batter only to have Baylor third baseman Raynor Campbell finish the game with a walk-off home run.

The Bears jumped to an early lead when they brought two men home in both the first and second inning. They added to that lead in the sixth by taking advantage of a Mavs throwing error, bringing a man in from second base.

The Mavs fought back in the top of the sixth, putting up six runs on two hits and capitalizing on two Baylor errors.

“It was nice to battle back,” Thomas said. “We did a good job of staying in the game.”

UTA scored only in two innings whereas Baylor put up points in five innings, which raises questions about the team’s consistency.

“We have to find the key to winning games,” Thomas said.

Kendal Carrillo kept the Mavs in the game early on, pitching three innings while giving up just one hit and striking out five batters.
