Mustangs tied for 1st after sweeping DC

The Sweetwater High School baseball team began the second half of District 3-3A play the same way it ended the first half -- with lopsided victories.

And the Mustangs did it all against one team -- in the space of about 3 1/2 hours -- in Tuesday's doubleheader sweep here against Denver City which moved Sweetwater into a tie for the district lead.

Sweetwater (5-1 district, 17-6 overall) needed a total of only 9 1/2 innings to complete the sweep, winning both games by the 10-run rule. The Mustangs won the opener, 12-1, and prevailed 10-0 in Game 2.

Sweetwater is tied for first place with Snyder, which routed Lamesa 23-0. The Mus-tangs and Tigers are a game ahead of 4-2 Seminole, which is all alone in third place after edging Merkel 1-0. Lamesa is 1-5, while Denver City -- which agreed to Tuesday's doubleheader after the teams' scheduled March 21 district opener in Denver City was rained out -- is last at 0-6.

Sweetwater goes to Seminole for a huge game this Friday which starts at 7 p.m., then plays its final two home games next week against Lamesa and Merkel before ending the regular season April 22 at Snyder.

On Tuesday, Denver City took a 1-0 lead in Game 1 when Rowdy Warren doubled and Kelsey Hinson singled him home in the bottom of the first inning. But that was about the only highlight for the visiting Mustangs.

Sweetwater, which was the visiting team in Game 1, scored five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs made it 6-1 after three innings, then closed the deal with a six-run fifth.

Freshman pitching ace Kendal Carrillo, meanwhile, settled down after a sluggish start to improve his record to 5-2. Carrillo, who leads the team in victories this season, scattered five hits, struck out three and walked two.

Sweetwater had 16 hits, with every starter collecting at least one. Mark Garcia, Mychal Carrillo and Garrett Ferguson had RBI singles in the five-run second; Randyn Tenery had an RBI single in the third and stroked a two-run triple in the fifth inning; Jack Squires had a two-run single in the fifth; and Bubba Moncada singled to drive in the final run. Moncada had three hits and Ferguson, Squires, Tenery, Kendal Carril-lo and Michael Straley each had two, while Squires scored three runs and Straley, Garcia and pinch-runner Austen Kite two.

Steven Reed (2-1) got the start in Game 2 and was in total control, hurling a two-hit shutout. He struck out four and walked three in five innings.

Sweetwater had 10 hits in the nightcap, and again scored six runs in its final at-bat. That final outburst more than doubled what had been a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning.

Straley, Moncada and Tenery each had two hits for the Mustangs.

Straley drilled a bases-loaded double to highlight the six-run fourth, while Moncada had an RBI single in the third and a run-scoring double in the fourth and Tenery singled in Straley with the first run in the second inning.

Straley's big hit in the fourth made it 8-0, and he eventually scored following a wild pitch and passed ball.

Squires, who had walked, moved to third after the passed ball and Tenery's infield hit.

Tenery then stole second, and a throwing error on the play allowed Squires to score the final run.

"What I was most proud of was that we got two Ws," said head coach Connie Cochran. "Our pitchers both went out and had a pretty good outing, and we put some runs up on the board." By RON HOWELL
