Gatesville is a tough team that had a good plan for Burnet. Thayer is a workhorse and I can't imagine that there's too many better RBs in 3A.

Gateville made at least four 4th downs by about an inch apiece to keep the game as close as it was. I'm not saying the spots were off, because I couldn't really tell from my angle; but it was just interesting, let's say that.

Wa hooo 2-0! Lol, does anybody know how Liberty Hill did? Oh and I guess that rumor about Gatesville not losing a home game in 4 years isn't true anymore.. :)

The Dogs beat Gatesville, but they knew they were in a tough football game! Gatesville never gave up (not that we expected them to). They were well disciplined and hard nosed. Shipley was doubled all night which let Warner loose again. The game was closer than the score indictated.

Just can't say enough about the RB, Thayer. He was a hoss and pretty darn fast too. Good luck to the Hornets for the remainder of 2003!

Thayer sounded like he is a very good running back. If Gatesville wasn't a one dimensional team it would have been an extremely tight game as Thayer was hurting the Burnet D. Just another thing to work on...Run D...

How crowded was the game?

BurnetBulldog, the stadium was pretty crowded, we got there at 6:45 and went straight to the Gatesville side of the stadium. The fans for Gatesville were very friendly and accomodating. It seemed as though there were a lot of Burnet fans on the Gatesville side.

Most JV teams in the State could beat Smithville. Since LH plays such an incredibly weak schedule, you can't tell anything about them until District. If your coaches would schedule a little tougher schedule, you would probably have a better shot at the Playoff's.

Gatesville played their butts off. Their O line is incredibly good in my opinion. The got away with some holding but I guess every does. They controlled the line of scrimmage most of the night and with a back like Thayer behind them, watch out! He IS the best back in 3A (although I've only seen him play twice...I'm a believer) and has one of the best lines in front of him IMHO.
Bottom line - I think Gatesville is underrated and will be tough tough tough down the stretch. Burnet won and should have but it was closer than the score indicated. McGee and co. were too much to overcome. Good luck to both teams. I think they both play into December.

Okay, some thoughts about the game...

I have NEVER seen a running back like Thayer in my life. We had guys literally bouncing off of him. He was so hard to stop that there must have been 6 guys that had to bring him down at several points during the game. Does anyone know where he is going? Also, #21 was very impressive (sorry, I didn't catch his name)

I do want to point out that when we lost Saldivar to an injury, that opened up Thayer's advances, and that is when they started really moving and giving us a challenge. Saldivar was doing a most excellent job of blocking in my opinion. If you have the right guys in there, it is easier to stop Thayer, but man- I was blown away!

I think Gatesville will have a great run this year. I was so impressed with the fans-- and their band was great! Very classy group of people!

Now the refs...that's another story- There were a couple of terrible calls. One in particular was a personal foul on Cody Warner when he managed to tackle Thayer. It was a clean hit (and one of the only hits I saw Thayer take that took him straight down!)! I just didn't get it. There were a couple more calls that seemed a little off to a lot of people, but for the most part, it's not that the refs were bad- but they were just
S - L - O - W! (in their decisions)

Great game, and very exciting- Burnet had their hands full- hats off to Gatesville and best of luck during the rest of your season. 3A, beware- they are a STRONG 2nd half team!

I must say one more thing about Thayer. On one of his TDs, did anyone notice how he took on two defenders, and with his upper body leaning back (because they were holding on to him) still managed to drag the whole mess across the goal line!

Yeah, he is a monster on the field. I was blown away by this kids strength and talent.I have never been more impressed with a player on any opposing team as I was with this young man. Seriously- does anyone know where he is going?

Anyone have his stats for this game. It took a team efort to hold him down.

LaShon Thayer had 151 yds on 31 carries, most in the second half. His YAC (yards after contact) was probably half his total. He seemed to get stronger as the game went on. Boy what a stud.

Not only is Thayer an awesome running back, he is a humble young man who gives all the credit for his on-the-playing-field success to his offensive line. When LaShon moved to Gatesville with his parents and started working out with the team, I asked one of the senior lineman at that time what position he thought Thayer would play. His response was "anywhere he wants to play." We Hornet fans knew then we had a "keeper." Good luck to the Burnet Bulldogs. The Hornets and their fans will be cheering for you all the way to the state championship.

The reason he got more in the 2nd half is because one of our starting linemen sustained an injury(Saldivar).
