RICHMOND — Reserve junior guard Brian Grable ignited a sleeping Columbia offense by going 4-for-4 from 3-point land Wednesday night as the Roughnecks grabbed a 52-35 Region III, bi-district win over Bellville at Richmond Foster High School.

“Its not that big of a surprise with Grable, but he has been hitting those 3s

lately,” Columbia coach John Vernor said. “Boy, he just did a great job at the two position tonight.”

The win sends Columbia (14-17) to the area round where it will face Texas Hoops’ sixth-ranked team in Class 3A, Sour Lake Hardin-Jefferson, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill.

Jitters might have caused a turtle-like start as both teams combined to go 2-for-17 from the field in the first six minutes. Columbia hit just one of its first 10 shots until senior guard Jason Scott picked up his second foul in the first quarter and headed to the bench.

Grable took Scott’s spot in the lineup and calmly connected on his first trey opportunity as Columbia caught fire. The Roughnecks hit all five of their shots in the last couple minutes of the quarter to take a 15-4 lead.

The Brahmas (15-15) opened the game with a quick bucket by 6-foot-8 post Colton Smith for their only lead of the contest. Bellville did not score again until the final minute of the first period when Aaron Hoffman put in a layup.

Grable continued his hot shooting from beyond 20 feet by knocking down two treys as Columbia went 8-for-13 from the field in the second period. The Brahmas had another miserable quarter (4-for-16 shooting) as their main weapon, Terrence Bryant — who entered the contest averaging 16 points per game — never got on track in the first half.

“He is one of the top forces in the Houston area in 3A and also a top rebounder, but we concentrated on him tonight,” Vernor said. “We were nervous early, but our defense played great and got a lot of steals early. Once we knocked down a couple of buckets in a row, we settled down. The main thing was that someone finally made a shot in the beginning for us.”

By halftime, Bryant had only one basket as Bellville was a dismal 6-for-25 from the field, including 2-of-11 from the 3-point arc, and the ’Necks held a 31-15 halftime lead.

Early in the third period, Rick Gamboa’s bucket on the inside opened up what was Columbia’s biggest lead of the game, 35-15. Several times during the third stanza, the ’Necks pushed the advantage to 20 points as both offenses went cold, with each team scoring only eight points. Still, Columbia was able to maintain its 16-point advantage, leading 39-23 after three periods.

Bryant finally warmed up for Bellville in the second half as he scored 15 of the Brahmas’ final 20 points. But it was too late as Columbia cruised to the victory.

Bryant finished with 17 points to lead Bellville, while Grable had 12 points for Columbia, Justin Scott had 11, Gamboa chipped in eight and Dan Lee had seven.

Cuero Girls lose in OT - 57- 59 to Gonzales

ADVOCATE SPORTS WRITER

SCHULENBURG - The Gonzales Lady Apaches rallied in overtime to get past a determined Cuero Lady Gobblers squad 57-49 in the Class 3A regional quarterfinal playoffs Wednesday.

Keiera Steemer and Vanessa McMurry provided the heroics for Gonzales (14-5) after the scrappy Lady Gobblers nearly pulled off their fourth upset in as many games. McMurry was a scoring force for much of the game and led Gonzales with 18 points. Steemer, on the other hand, did not score until the end of the game, but those were the two biggest points of the night for Gonzales.

Steemer's first basket of the game came with just 10 seconds left to play. She got the ball to the left of the basket, got a good look at and nailed the shot. It was Steemer's big moment, but she'll have to rely on others to tell the story.

"Oh, man," Steemer said after the game, "I don't even remember it."

Gonzales will go on to face the winner of the Llano-Somerset game on Friday in the regional semifinals. That game is slated for 7:45 p.m. at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Steemer's basket capped the Gonzales comeback and wrestled a victory away from the Lady Gobblers (18-14), who had a pretty big comeback of their own.

The Lady Apaches took a comfortable eight-point lead into halftime. They strung together a 7-0 run in the middle of the first quarter and Shannon Arnic had the hot hand with a pair of 3-pointers. Arnic set the pace for Gonzales, scoring eight of her 11 points in the first quarter. Cuero had played timid against the Lady Apaches' press for the entire first half and was unable to string much together in the first two quarters.

All that changed in the third quarter.

The Lady Gobblers came out with some fire in the third quarter. They attacked the Gonzales press on offense and frustrated the opposition on defense. That led to an improbable 10-1 run by Cuero that put it right back in the game to start the third quarter.

"There was a lot of heart tonight," Cuero coach Terrence Fryer said. "They came out determined. They wanted to come back and play those girls and make it right."

The Lady Apaches appeared stunned by the Lady Gobblers' play in the second half as they struggled to regain the rhythm that put them ahead in the first half.

"They (Cuero) really came back," McMurry said. "This was the best that they've played since I started playing them."

Gonzales head coach John Wilson said he didn't think this game would turn out like the Lady Apaches' two other games against Cuero during the regular season.

"We knew Cuero was going to be tougher," Wilson said. "You could tell just by their two games before this one, but it was hard to convince the players that they were going to be better this time."

The Lady Gobblers kept themselves in the game despite major foul trouble in the second half. Laura Hahn led Cuero with 16 points, but fouled out with 2:28 to go in the game. Calli Blashcke and Caytlyn Holland both fouled out in the overtime period. Gonzales might have put the game away in regulation, but the Lady Apaches could not convert the chances from the free throw line. The Lady Apaches shot just 6-of-15 from the line in the fourth quarter.

McMurry and the Lady Apaches took over in the overtime period. She scored five points in overtime as the revitalized Lady Apaches outhustled Cuero at both ends of the floor. Megan Lange scored four of her 11 points in the overtime, but the rest of the lady Gobblers couldn't get a good look at the basket.

The loss ended the Lady Gobblers' first playoff run since 1997. Despite the bitterness of the loss, Fryer said the season was a big positive for Cuero girls basketball.

"I've worked to instill that sense of heart with this team," Fryer said. "That's what it's all about. You come out and you play the right way and with a lot of heart and be tough. They finally grasped that concept and that's how they played tonight. They were tough and I'm very proud of them."

Great job by both Team's -- Head's up Lady Gobblers way to represent
