Winona Parents Call For Reinstatement Of Former High School Principal

WINONA - Spokespersons in a crowd estimated at 75-100 asked during a Winona ISD board of trustees meeting that former high school principal Leland Hand be reinstated.

Shortly after convening in the small board room, the board adjourned for 30 minutes at the suggestion of Trustee Kenneth Langley and reconvened in the larger elementary school cafeteria so the whole crowd could attend.

Board President James said at the start of the portion of the meeting reserved for audience participation the board was there to listen to comments but could not respond.

About a half-dozen people addressed the board requesting the reinstatement of Hand. The principal was reassigned as director of student services about a month ago, district Superintendent Rodney Fausett said after the meeting. Since then, Wiley Vonner has served as acting principal.

Randy Hawkins, seeking Hand's reinstatement, applied a comment of the late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King to the school situation, saying "somebody has got to have sense."

Hawkins said trustees are supposed to care about children and people in the district. About 90 high school students signed a petition in 30 minutes wanting the principal reinstated, and the crowd at the meeting echoed, Hawkins said. Hand created a good environment for education without harassment, he added.

Christy Parks, a parent, said Hand did a good job with students, knew them by name and helped with their problems. She said she was told he was given a promotion but his office is in the maintenance building. It was better for children when Hand was principal in the high school than it is now that he is in the bus barn, Ms. Parks said.

Prior to the meeting, Ms. Parks said since Hand was moved at the middle of the school year, parents and students have not been able to get answers about what happened to him, why he was moved or what his current position is.

They have been told he got a promotion, but a promotion is not in the maintenance building, she said. Ms. Parks estimated 500 people have signed petitions requesting the principal be reinstated.

Pamela Thurman-Ford said children are not capable of learning when they are under emotional distress at school. She told trustees their job is to provide an education that will make them productive citizens.

Tom Tyner said prior to the meeting that what happened to Hand sounds similar to what happened to his son, Scott Tyner, head football coach several years ago, who was told to either resign or be reassigned without being given a reason.

Parent Melissa Bennesield said she became concerned when her two children said the principal had been reassigned. "He was an asset, we didn't want to lose him and we want him back," she said.
