with all the movie talk, i wanted to see who everyone thought was the best actor ever.

i say Denzel Washington or Jimmy Stewart

too many to chose from.

we need to break them down into generations and/or genres.

Johnny Depp & Leo DiCaprio are seriously some of the best actors of their generation.

Paul Newman & Robert Redford in their hey-day

William H. Macy is a great "character" actor

AP Panther Fan

1. Denzel Washington
2. Anthony Hopkins / Robert Duvall

Johnny is good but I wouldn't say "greatest."

Denzel tops my list. watch John Q then Training Day right after (or vice versa) and you'll see why.

Clive Owen is next. King Arthur and Inside Man (Also starring Denzel) are both awesome

3rd is no doubt Samuel L. Jackson. nuff said!

Sadly, with all the "greats" now in their late 60's it just seems they are playing the same character. It saddens me that Al Pacino now thinks "great" acting = yelling in every scene. And make no mistake, Al Pacino was the shiz in his younger years. Dog Day Afternoon, the GodFather I & II, Scarface.....

While washington is GOOD..I would not say he is the greatest if all time..Just IMO

And yes while he has played many different characters..I still see Denzel Washington on the screen

When someone like Tom Hanks or Johnny Depp play a role well, I see the character, not the actor

Okay so we are leaning more now towards just "good" actors and not "great" actors, but really with all the crap Hollywood puts out there aren't many "great" actors anymore so when an Ed Norton does American History X - it is just wow. Also dug him in Primal Fear, 25th Hour and Fight Club.

Same with Barry Pepper in Saving Private Ryan, 61* & The Green Mile.

There is a difference between actors who are considered "great" by their peers and "popular" actors. I like to see many actors in movies, but not all---like John Wayne---were considered great actors.

that's the point, he comes off as if he doesnt want the attention and yet that of course draws more attention. it's the actors key goal in seeming off and weird that lure the public in to want to know WHO WHAT WHY AND WHERE

same role which was played by Jeff Buckley, Jonathan Brandis and Kurt Cobain...and of course...they're all dead, go figure

as for his stunt for charlie and the chocolate factor, every actor is allowed to make one huge career move that could possibly damage their rep...as for Depp it took him a few years to actually hit that spot

I liked his version of Charlie

that entire movie gave no justice to the previous film.

the thing is that the industry didnt realize is when you remake a good classic film you've got to keep to the original script--yet just enhance it. this is why that movie didnt hit it big, it was only big for the sake of the promoters until they were asked to just stop.

depp himself has said if he had the chance to redo any film over again and make it different it would have been that one and he said he'd prefer to keep it the same...

for serious and gene wilder said it best when he commented about that movie in 2005 about how people just want to make money...

and you could definitely see that

See here is where the problem lies..Tim Burton and Depp stayed true the ORIGINAL story...the 70's version not as much.though not an extreme adaptation..But people think of the 70's version as the "original" one. IMO I never liked the first version. I liked the second

:dispntd: I strongly disagree.

You see, one thing people don't realize is...Charlie & the Chocolate Factory was not written as a musical! :hand:

Not saying I don't LOVE the 1st one, i grew up on that movie...there just shouldn't be a comparison to the 2.

Agian that is going on what we were raised as the real Wonka..I think Depp was a better Wonka than Wilder..Not that Wilder was bad, but his Wonka was goofy IMO..Depp walked the line of eccentric and craziness.

Gene Wilder's take on the character differed from Johnny's in the sense he wanted his character to be more children friendly as Wilder made his more adult.

understandable yes.

but acting wise? you cant compare the two, depp is in his own league

See that is where I will disagree...I dont think Depps was more kid friendly..He hated being around the kids and showed that many times

Wilder's version..and the movie in general was a tamer "prettier" version..agian IMO

Anybody can play a good guy if you've got a good script. A well-written script can make any pretty-boy look good.

Try being a bad guy in movies and pulling it off time and again.....

I know Fast Times at Ridgemont High creates bias against him, but Sean Penn gets my vote as one of the greatest. He's got the guts to play rotten characters (Dead Man Walking, Mystic River).

Try to get Tom Cruise to play a bad guy. That megalomaniac would never go for it.

I thought Brad Pitt really overcame the "eye candy" label with his roles in 12 Monkeys, and Meet Joe Black, but he's still not one of the greatest.

Sean Penn
Anthony Hopkins
De Niro
Pacino
Liam Neeson
Tim Roth

all these should be on the short list.....

his character to the kids in the movie wasnt as nice but neither was wilder's version

but the way he protrayed himself off screen was children friendly

okay, not the greatest, but possibly the best at what he does: John Cusack :inlove:

I agree. Though I wouldn't call him one of the best all time actors, I've enjoyed every movie he's ever done, though it's a close call on that America's Sweethearts.

Cusack's films have an edge to them. Not the same edge as Sean Penn, but a good edge. Grosse Point Blank is a good example.....

I really like Edward Norton as far as acting ability, but he's not one of my 'bankroll' actors, or guy that I'd see just because he's in the movie. I typically won't watch a movie just because of the actors, but I'd go to see just about anything with Kevin Costner, Brad Pitt, Robert Duvall, and John Wayne mostly because of the scripts they pick. I also like Ryan Reynolds, George Clooney, Justin Long, Norm McDonald, and the Broken Lizard guys, but I'm a little more picky about what they're in.
