Columbia beat Stafford 60-52!

Wharton 12-2
Columbia 10-4
Stafford 9-5

There are your playoff teams in order from our district. Now who plays who? Anybody?

Wait, the winner of Sweeny and Needville is also 9-5, so wont there have to be a play-in game for 3rd place?

I havent heard the Navasota vs Giddings matchup Bellville won tonight vs Smithville 60-50.

Navasota 8-1 (Before tonight)
Giddings 8-1 (Before tonight)
Bellville 7-3 3rd seed

1st seeds get 1st round bye? Bellville would play 2nd seed Columbia.

In District 24-3A, the winner between Columbia (12-7, 9-4) and Stafford (9-4 in district play) will make the playoffs as the second-place team in the loop behind Wharton.

Determining the third and final playoff team gets trickier, because Sweeny (21-10, 8-5) plays at Needville (8-5 in district) and both of those teams still are in the picture.

If Columbia were to lose and Sweeny beats Needville, then Columbia still gets in based on its head-to-head sweep of Sweeny.

If Columbia were to lose and Needville beats Sweeny, then Needville gets in based on a sweep of Columbia.

For Sweeny to have a chance to make the playoffs, it must win its 7:30 p.m. start today and have Columbia beat Stafford.

That would force a one-game tie-breaker between Sweeny and Stafford, which split games in district play.

Needville lost to Stafford both times so Stafford is the third seed, just like I had it to begin with.

The Facts

WEST COLUMBIA — The Roughnecks hustled their way into the playoffs Tuesday, holding off stubborn Stafford, 60-52, in the season’s District 24-3A finale for both teams.

Columbia will meet Bellville at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in a bi-district playoff game.

Senior Jason Scott poured in a game-high 22 points, had 10 rebounds and managed seven steals Tuesday as John Vernor’s Roughnecks capped off district play with a 10-4 record.
“Jason played his heart out,” Vernor said, “and we held on down the stretch. It feels good to be going to the playoffs, especially the way we started this year.”

“We just seemed to get things together after district started,” Vernor said. “The kids never gave up.”

The game was nip-and-tuck most of the way. Columbia used an 11-0 run to finish out the second quarter as the slick Scott tallied eight points. That surge by the Roughnecks put them up 31-23 at the intermission.

After Stafford scored the first bucket of the third quarter, Columbia went on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to the largest margin of the hotly-contested game, 37-25.

Sophomore Zack Garcia hit a long three from the deep corner in the run.

But the patient Spartans battled back by reeling off eight straight points to cut the lead back to four, 37-33.

Scott then scampered down the lane for a layup and as he was fouled. He hit his freebie to get the lead back to 40-33.

Senior Rick Gamboa then twisted down the lane and hit an eight-foot bank shot, only to have Stafford counter with a jumper by Chad Hawkins, leaving the ’Necks with a 44-39 lead going into the final quarter.

Hawkins canned a deep trey from the corner to cut the Columbia lead to two, 48-46, before the ’Necks started pulling away.

Gamboa, who closed out with 12 points and five rebounds, then hit a soft jumper in the lane, and moments later dished to teammate Dan Lee for a layup and 54-47 lead with 2:45 left in the contest.

Stafford got within four, 54-50, before a key free throw from Justin Scott and layup by Josh Collins off an assist from Justin Scott gave the Roughnecks some needed breathing room, 57-50.

Lee, who finished with seven points, sealed the victory with two free throws with seven seconds left.

“Jason held us together in the first half and Zack hit two big shots for us,” Vernor said, “Rick had some shots that just wouldn’t go in, but he still came up big for us when we needed him.”

needville beat sweeny in OT i forgot the score but it was a good game for the most part. needville played hard, and got a little help from the refs, but that wasn't the main issue. sweeny missed many easy shots and couldn't get a rebound to save their life. add all of that and the needville crowd, it makes it hard to win. good game, congrats to the Bluejays, and good season to the Bulldogs.
