I have a kid in one of my classes that I just asked how he thought he was doing in my class. I said "what do you think you are making in here right now". HIS REPLY "I think I'm passing but barely"

I then printed out his progress report and of the 12 grades I have taken this six weeks....12 are zero's.

Well obviously your at fault, and not him. I mean cmon YOU should have FORCED him to do better..and if he did not turn anything in, then it is YOUR fault for not understanding his situation and passing him anyway

good luck with the kid, man... sad the parent is like that... that works in a lot of ways, tough love, but when it comes to getting an education you have to be more active in the child's learning...

WOW, two questions.

1) Is he a football player?
2) Have you considered taking a communication class. Obviously there is a gap in the communication between you and the student. You must be able to let him know before 12 weeks is over that he is not barely getting by. If the communication were good, when you asked the question, he would have replied, "Based on our previous conversations, I am failing miserably."

Gee, I wonder where the kid gets it from?

First of all ----- TIC (tounge in cheek)

Second --- Why did KA bother to ask, if he knew the kid didn't care and already knew? Spend more time with those that do care and keep printing out the sheets for the kid, have him initial them and put them in a folder to share with his boss when his (KA's) performance review comes up.

Serious question:

Curious why you said "kids nowadays..."

Is this really any different than some kids 20, 30, 40 years ago?

THANK you...I get so tired of hearing how kids "now days" are a problem...Makes it seem like kids from past generations were all straight A students who never drank, had sex, or got in trouble.

Simple fact is because of internet, cable news, easier communications ability, the facts of today are projected more.

If you want to know the truth, then yes there is a difference. The simplest (and shortest) explanation is that parents (in general) don't trust those in authority. IMO it started with the Vietnam War. That distrust of those in authority has caused a major problem in our schools. No longer is it the students fault when they screw up. It's now the teacher's fault because they didn't stop everything to make sure that little Johnny (who wasn't paying attention anyway) understood every last little thing that the teacher was saying. And if little Johnny still didn't understand, then the teacher is responsible for teaching it in another way so that little Johnny might catch on. Nevermind the other 25 students that are sitting their doing nothing waiting on little Johnny to catch up.

And heaven forbid that little Johnny should fail. Because if that happens then it's the teacher's fault for not instructing better. Forget the fact that little Johnny was at home every evening playing his 360, PS3, and listening to his Ipod when he should have been doing his homework and studying.

....stepping off soap box....

I agree!! Kids "these days" and kids "back in the day"....are two different breeds of kids, IMO!!

That's how I feel when some people generalize parents (basically every parent) as being bad in regards to the problems in this day and time. :(
