In the coaching profession, to get a good job, is it more important to have strong "contacts", or is it better to be knowledgeable of your sport? Come on folks, I'm sure there are some awesome opinions here on the Downlow.

In some instances, "who you know" could be a bad thing. (I'm just saying.... ;) )

I know a lot... esspecially the defense... you can always tell a good defense by how well they run the ball...

Who you know is good, but be careful with whom you are associated. I do think having connections is a huge plus in getting a job and moving up, but if you don't know your stuff, you won't last long and those who you know will stop giving you recommendations.

Well in DISD, in many cases, it seems that WHO you know often takes precedence over WHAT you know.

i think in DISD its pretty easy to get an assistants job even not knowing people but if you want a head coaching job you better know some people

I think that is the way it is almost everywhere. At least IMO.

you have to be very knowledgeable
you have to have a proven track record
you have to be able to handle yourself well
you have to be at the right place at the right time
you have to know people who can help you
I've seen guys with all these things who couldn't get a sniff
I've seen guys with none of these things who got a job

It isn't who you know, contrary to popular belief.

It isn't what you know, even though it should be.

The truth of the matter is it is who knows you.
