Columbia bests Sweeny, 64-49

By Butch McReynolds
The Facts

Published February 7, 2007

SWEENY — Senior Rick Gamboa tossed in a game-high 22 points and cleaned the glass for 11 rebounds as Columbia held off Sweeny, 64-49, in a key District 24-3A game Tuesday night.

“It’s really good to win a game like this on the road,” Columbia Coach John Vernor said. “We blew a couple of big leads before taking over there at the end. But give Sweeny credit, they just wouldn’t go away. That’s what happens with these two teams play.”

While Columbia stepped up to 9-3 in district play and 12-16 overall, the Bulldogs fell to 7-5 in district and 20-10 overall. Sweeny went into the neighborhood matchup tied with Stafford and Needville for third place.

Columbia used its hard pressing defense to jump out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter, and then stretched that lead to 35-21 at the half.

“They (Bulldogs) really bundled us up on the inside in the first half, and it made it very difficult to take advantage of our size,” Vernor said. “But then (junior Brian) Grable hit two big 3-point shots and (sophomore Zach) Garcia hit another and it helped open up the middle for Gamboa.”

Down by 19 points, 45-26, the Bulldogs closed the gap to eight, 45-37, at the end of the third quarter behind the hot shooting of sophomore Dane Hooker, who had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Marquis Flores also was a key contributor down the stretch, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists.

But the visiting Roughnecks unloaded on the Bulldogs to start the fourth quarter, feeding the ball to Gamboa.

Gamboa hit a pair of layups, and then senior Josh Collins followed up a missed shot inside and senior Jason Scott hit a pair of free throws to give the ’Necks some breathing room, 52-37.

Sweeny tightened its defense and bounced back as freshman John Williams hit a jumper in the lane before Gamboa hit a leaning 10-footer to make it 54-42.

Sweeny then went to work, as Hooker made a long three from the corner and Flores scored with a driving layup to cut the margin to 54-47.

But from that point, Columbia took over as Gamboa hit a pair of leaners inside the lane. Chris Jammer made a layup and guard Dan Lee hit an uncontested trey at the buzzer to secure the final score.

Once again, the Scott twins, seniors Jason and Justin, led the ’Necks’ press — each coming up with six steals. Jason finished with 12 points and four boards, while Justin closed with seven points and eight rebounds.

Senior Josh Collins finished with eight points and seven rebounds for the victors while Lee had four points and six rebounds from his guard spot.

Senior Tank Carder muscled in the paint for six points and seven rebounds for the ’Dogs, while freshman John Williams clocked out with eight points and eight rebounds to go along with six steals and four assists.

congrats wharton, it is still going to be interesting to see how 2nd and 3rd unfold with two games left. Giddings won as did navasota, our one loss in district thus far still trails the might navasota by one game. Could be an interesting game in navasota if giddings brings their A+ game.

the boys are decent, but IMO the boys basketball program in W.C. is going to be down until the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders now get into high school.

the girls program will drop slightly after jade davis graduates, but they have some good talent in the junior high ranks.

** Columbia needs a win against Stafford to preserve a playoff spot, if they lose things are going to get messy.

the wharton-sweeny game along with the clombia-needville game proved that if you're off slightly from your best performance.....

you're in for a long night.

4 teams for 3 slots remaining......

be sure and get out and support your hometown teams!!

i really dont think Brookshire has enough fire power to compete with our boys...unless a total meltdown occurs, i think the guys will win big!

tomorrow will be an interesting night in this district. More than one game with the playoffs on the line. Our district will be watching to see who gets who.

This district looks to be pretty even after you get past wharton, who looks to be a little above everone else (or a lot before this last loss).

neck_06, it looks like our Lady Cats are up against WC in the next round of girls basketball play-offs.

Aren't the Lady 'Necks undefeated? It ought to be a good game in Barbers Hill.

Oh, and give 'em hell when you get on the mound at Olsen! Gig 'em!
