A Super Sunday
Local athletes leave mark on football's biggest game

A Super Bowl ring (or two) was going to come to Abilene - that much was certain as soon as the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts earned a spot in the big game two weeks ago.

The only real question was who would be wearing it when it got here.
Now, we know the answer.

Thanks to a huge defensive effort and a running game that kept the Bears on their heels through most of the night, Indianapolis took a 29-17 win in Super Bowl XLI on Sunday, making former Cooper High School stars Dominic Rhodes and Justin Snow world champions.

Rhodes had a fantastic showing, finishing with 113 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. He also had one catch for eight yards. It was Rhodes' sixth career 100-plus yard game, but the first since his rookie season in 2001.

His touchdown came in the first half, but he continued to get yards in the second half, including a big 36-yard run in the third quarter. Rhodes nearly got another touchdown in the third but was stopped a few yards shy by former Abilene Christian University standout Danieal Manning, the starting free safety for Chicago.

Snow, the Colts' long snapper, was nearly perfect. Kicker Adam Vinatieri did miss a field goal on the last play of the first half, but the snap was fine, as was the hold of Hunter Smith. Snow did have one low snap on a third-quarter field goal, but Smith saved it and Vinatieri knocked it through the uprights to give the Colts a 19-14 lead.

Manning, a rookie taken 42nd overall in the NFL draft, started his day well, getting a tackle on Indianapolis' opening kickoff return, and a short time later got a hand on a deflected pass.

He finished the game with six total tackles with five of them going down as solo stops.

Dream Comes True for Colts' Dominic Rhodes: He's 'Going to Disney World!' After Joining Coach Tony Dungy in Famous Commercial
MIAMI, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Head Coach Tony Dungy and running back Dominic Rhodes of the Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts Sunday night became the latest sports celebrities to realize a dream, stand in front of a TV camera, and shout the famous "going to Disney World" phrase. And Monday, Rhodes heads to Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando to also make a few special kids' dreams come true as they will play the first-ever game of football on Main Street, U.S.A. on a specially built gridiron.

Their "We're going to Disney World" pronouncement, part of the production for one of TV's most enduring and celebrated commercials, was captured Sunday night on tape at Miami's Dolphin Stadium just moments after the Colts' 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Dungy became the first African American head coach to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champion, while Rhodes rushed for a game-leading 113 yards and a second- quarter touchdown that put the Colts ahead for keeps.

The commercial -- which also includes a Disneyland version for the West Coast -- is the 37th of a series that began in 1987 following Super Bowl XXI. The first "I'm going to Disney World" commercial, featuring New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, was regarded as a groundbreaking concept -- a produced national commercial involving a current event, airing on major networks hours after the event.

And this latest installment is to follow a similar script, airing Feb. 5 - - when Rhodes is to be in Disney's Magic Kingdom along with a group of children, ages 8 to 11, who normally participate in NFL Youth Football leagues around Central Florida. But on this magical Monday, they will participate in an unprecedented game of football in the shadows of Cinderella Castle.

For the first time in history, a football field will be constructed on Main Street, U.S.A. near the theme park's gleaming royal icon. The children will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run plays with Rhodes less than 24 hours after he starred in his team's Super Bowl XLI victory.

While Rhodes' participation in a Magic Kingdom football game is a first, he joins a lineup of sports heroes such as Tom Brady, Emmitt Smith, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Joe Montana, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Troy Aikman, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Doug Williams, Magic Johnson, Patrick Roy and Super Bowl XL star Hines Ward who have been featured during two decades of "I'm going to Disney World" commercials

DOMINIC RHODES: 21 carries 113 yards 1 TD

It seemed like whenever the Colts needed a big play, the ball ultimately wound up in the hands of Dominic Rhodes. The 113 yards he racked up on the ground led all running backs as he averaged 5.4 yards per touch. He handled all the tough ground duties, pounding it into the middle of a rough Bears D-line all night and seemed to break tackle after tackle. Rhodes powered through the line all night for the yards that meant the most, giving the Colts their first lead on his touchdown and racking up 7 first downs on the ground.
