Was it Stephen McGee?

Philip Daugherty?

I don't know too terribly much about 3A yet, but i do know Quan Cosby was an animal in 2A (even if some would classify him as a running back ;)).

I could go on all day about 2A, but tell me about some of your best-seen.

As far as "arm" goes, Phillip Daugherty would have to be up there. For both running and passing ability, G.J. Kinne would have to be near the top. Wasn't Mission 3A when Detmer was there?

I thought Mission was 5A when Detemer was there...

It may have been, Matthew---I was just "recollecting" and doing more asking than telling because Detmer just came to mind. Didn't Everman have a stud or two at QB when they were in 3A?

Tye Gunn. He threw a 54 yard td pass running to the right across the field to the endzone on the left corner under pressure in the 2000 Mathis LG game Quarterfinals at Alamo Heights Stadium. Not very many QBs could do that. In the final against Forney down 17-14 with 3 minutes left and the ball on his own 4 yard line he engineered a 96 yard drive highlighed by a 44 yard run and a 2 yard dive for the go ahead score 20-17. The Jackrabbits drove to the 11 and fumbled the ball with 1:54 on the clock. The leps were held to 4th and 2 on their own 22 yardline and Gunn took it around the right corner dragging the CB and diving for the first down to seal the victory.

I would say Brock but this isn't for RB or even DB, J/K, I don't want to start anything.

I would have to say that even though his college numbers didn't go too well b/c of injuries Tye Gunn was a beast in high school. He was one of the best dual threat QB's b/c LG ran the option well back then also. I don't recall anyone else that was a standout on the teams he was on so he was very good.

I like A&M and McGee but he did have Shipley atleast to catch.

I played with him. He was awesome but I don't know if he was ever the best quarterback. He was on the best running qbs I've ever seen but he didn't get the oppurtunity to pass very much.

Tye Gunn
Took the team to the semis his freshman year, won state his senior. Rushed for over 1,000 yards his junior and senior year. Also was an all-district punter, and took a fake punt something like 70 yards in the playoffs against a very good Yoakum team on one of the first series of the game. Could throw the ball deep very well, would lower his shoulder and run a lot of people over, and just straight up was the leader of the varsity his entire career.

oh i dont regret this season dont get me wrong...its just the luck of the draw and we drew the #3 team in state at the time...we hung with them for a while and then we got down on ourselves...i aint gonna complain about anything...i was just saying how i could have been...

one that everybody is overlooking is Cliff Watkins from Breckenridge in the late 1990's. One of the best option QB's in the state but also had a very adequate arm...good enough for him to play at Arizona for a few years before transferring to ACU (I think that's where he went).

Clint Finley. Pure athlete. He could run over you, around you, and past you. Exceptional athlete.

Finley's my pick.

I'd also throw Adrian Alaniz in there.

Billy Pittman was as good an athlete playing QB as I have ever seen. He could just flat out beat a team with his arm or legs. The thing about Billy is he was smart also. He could have played in almost any system. Nebraska recruited him as an option QB and when he ran the scout team at Texas, they say the first team defense had a hard time stopping him.

I would have to throw Brad Goebel into the mix. Played for Cuero, Baylor, the Browns and the Eagles. Around 6'5", pure drop back passer with a "gun" for an arm. I know this arm first hand, he bounced a few off of my facemask. :D

I'm gonna have to go with Grady Watts from Clyde... Graduated from Clyde in 2000... Laser rocket arm but didn't have many receivers to work with... Made all-State with a 6-4 record and they didn't even make the playoffs so that tells you something...

Brett Hicks, Bandera, led them to Semis before tearing his ACL, then came back next year (2002) and won state. currently playing at Sam Houston. nah, kidding, hes not the best, but he was pretty dang good.

Ken Collums, Vernon. He's now the OC at ACU. Led the Lions to back to back Finals appearances and brought home one title. The real threat in that backfield was the RB Derrick Richardson, but Collums forced defenses into a bind by not being able to load up against the run. Dude had a canon and pinpoint accuracy.

I don't think Keenum was the best ever, but there is definitely something to be said for him. He just had this aura around him that he could make any play at any time. It was crazy.
