View Full Version : Sports Trivia

I thought it would be fun to start off the day with a little sports trivia.

Its a free for all game, and the way it will work is the 1st person to answer the question correctly will get to ask the next question.

It can be whatever topic you choose: football, baseball, soccer, HS, Pro, College, whatever!

Have fun! That is the whole point! :D

Terry you are exempt from this question being the devoted Texas fan you are. Even though you don't know what question I am asking....:p

My question is:

Name the Texas linebacker that was the number 1 pick for both the NFL Falcons, and the AFL Oilers who ultimately chose to go with the more seasoned NFL, who while with the Falcons was a 5 time Pro bowler but during his 11 season career, the Falcons never made it to the playoffs.

Ok here is one.

I was the QB for a giant killing football team in 1961. We didn't have a good season but we had two major football upsets that year (one a tie and the other a win) that cost two teams the Mythical National Championship that year. What was the team I was qb for and who am I? (2 answers)

I will give it to you anyway. His name was Sonny Gibbs. Your turn.

Phil C
01-26-2007, 12:24 PM
For information purposes in 1961 TCU had a 3-5-2 record but had two upsets that year that cost two teams the National Championships. One of the upsets was early in the year when they tied Ohio State 7 to 7. Ohio State had the lead but TCU scored a td to tie it. Gibbs had a good passing day that day. After the score was tied Ohio State moved down the field but Gibbs intercepted what at first looked like a td pass thus saving the tie for TCU. That was Ohio State's only blemish for the year and I think they were ranked No. 2 at the time.
Later TCU beat Texas 6 - 0 which was UT's only blemish also and UT was ranked No. 1 at the time.

TCU did it both times on the road too.

That was the one I was looking for. I would have accepted Pete Lammons who was a tight end for the Jets but George was his favorite receiver.

Two other Longhorns that played for the Jets that year were John Elliott who was a defensive lineman and Jim Hudson who was a defensive back.

Ironically all these players played against Namath in the Orange Bowl in 1965 that UT won.

No it was because he went into pro football rather than return to UT for his senior year. Ironically George quit football I think in the early 70s which was early in his career which probably kept him out of the pro football hall of fame. I will ask an easier one.
