wednesday, my wife's back went out on her. she has 2 slipped discs in her back from a few years ago. we called the humana nurse hotline and after giving symptoms, she advised us to go to the ER. even to call an ambulance if she wanst able to make it in the car. i got her in the car and took off. we were in the waiting area for 7 hours (and not eaten anything all day) before i decided to leave and i took her to an urgent care clinic. we were in and out in 1/2 an hour. she got a shot and a couple prescriptions. i was hoping to have xrays done and more careful check-up done at the ER, but alas, they never saw her due to too much ambulance traffic. i know its not the hospital's fault as they see patients on a seriousness of injury basis. but it was disheartening having my wife in excruciating pain laying on a tiny bench for 7 hours not being able to stand or sit. i hate emergency rooms. :(

That's good, let me know!

When I went to the ER in Lamesa, I was the only patient, I was in and out and 20 minutes, or so.

No X-rays, just cleaned the wound and put the "dura-bond" glue on it. I got the bill the other day, before Insurance...it was $991.00.

I think that is just ridiculous!!!!

Avoid ERs if at all possible. Urgent care centers or your primary care doctor are best for most of these types of problems. Broken bones, large lacerations, hand injuries, severe asthma attacks, venimous bites, etc are best treated in an ER. The problem with ERs is that uninsured people and illegal immigrants go there for primary care, don't pay their bills and the hospital passes the costs on to folks with insurance or cash. It is a broken system and needs to be remedied. You can get supplemental insurance through various vendors (Citi Bank has one) that for a few cents a day will cover you for some of the costs of ER visits. I have one that pays $150 for a visit. That covers my copay.

our first thought was to go to urgent care, but the nurse hotline from Humana suggested we go to the ER. and since im sure insurance companies would likely want the cheaper route, we figured it must really be serious. why would humana suggest ER when its cheaper elsewhere. they even went as far as telling us to get an ambulance if necessary. hindsite, we should have gone to the urgent care :( but our lesson is learned.
