accoding to the Caller Times newspaper, a Consulting firm was hired for a feasibilty study on adding football to the list of college sports (Div. 1 AA Southland Conference). here is a list they came upp with of pros & cons. a funny thing i noticed was the reference to Jimmy Buffet LOL

NACDA Consulting summarized what it believed would be the strengths and weaknesses of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi adding a football program.

Strengths

Well-defined university goals

An understanding by the university of the economics of adding a Division I-AA football team

The Jimmy Buffett culture of the university

Beach location

Community support to build the American Bank Center and Whataburger Field

Community pride in the university

Southland Conference membership

Weaknesses

Faculty does not understand the investment in - and benefits of - athletics

Lack of space to expand for football and women's soccer facilities

Student support not strong at off-campus venues

The athletics identity is not visible

Lack of corporate sponsorship dollars available

Lack of community support for the athletic program

Budget, including scholarships, insurance, Title IX needs and staffing needs

As for the weaknesses, I think they are about to solve some of their lack of space issues when the City gives the golf course to them.

I also find it hard to believe that there is a shortage of corporate sponsorships. If Corpus will support Whataburger Field, the American Bank Center and hockey of all things...I think they will support college athletics. It may be too soon, but given time to alleviate each of the weaknesses, I can see this happening.

And of course there is the Jimmy Buffet mentality:rolleyes:

lol...Cabiness Field not good enough I take it. Last time I went there was a few years ago when Sinton played Zapata. You are right, the parking is horrible. I think I had to walk a mile.

 If A&MCC fields a team they will play at Buc Stadium after spending $500,000 to meet the Southland Conference standards. A new stadium would cost up to $25million.

They wasted money on a consultant probably. They could have gone to Kingsville to see a great stadium with pleanty of parking. The only thing they would probably want to make a stadium with much more capacity.

I think eventually fielding a football team was the main goal in joining the Southland Conference. They already have decent men's and women's basketball teams. That's what the consultant was talking about with the "lack of support" item. They have been selling tickets to the pumkinball games at $1.00 each lately. They need to realize one very important factor about that, IT'S PUMKINBALL!!!. Football is a whole 'nother story.
