Melissa Opens As Rick Gagarin Steps Down As AD/Head Coach

Melissa’s Gagarin to step aside

By Jason Della Rosa
Herald Democrat

Melissa athletic director and head football coach Rick Gagarin has stated his decision to step down from both positions, it was announced by the school Wednesday. Gagarin, the only person to hold those jobs in the four-year history of the Cardinals’ athletic program, cited personal health reasons for the decision to step aside at the conclusion of the 2006-07 academic year.

“I’d like to thank the kids, parents, and community for the opportunity to lead the athletic program for the last four years,” Gagarin said in a release. “But at this time my current health status limits my ability to do the job that the community deserves.”

The search for Gagarin’s replacement will begin almost immediately and is an interesting opening to potential candidates.

The Cardinals returned all 22 starters, went 9-4 last season — their first year in Class 2A — and advanced to the region semifinals before losing to Holliday, 23-14.

After finishing the regular season 7-3 and second in District 13-2A, Melissa won its first-ever playoff game with a victory over Gunter and defeated Clarksville in the area around.

“They’ve been playing varsity ball against bigger and experienced players since they were sophomores and getting beat up pretty bad,” Gagarin said before the Holliday game. “We had a good year last year but didn’t get in the playoffs. This has been a fun ride for everyone.”

The Cardinals lose 13 players to graduation — the school’s first senior class — including running back Wade Saxon, who rushed for 1,122 yards and 19 touchdowns, and receiver Kaleb Kaetterhenry, who caught 18 passes.

Among the players returning are sophomore quarterback Zach Williams, an honorable mention All-State pick who ran for 1,295 and 15 touchdowns and threw for 884 yards, and leading receiver, junior Charlie Cottrell.

In its first two varsity seasons, Melissa went 11-9 in Class 1A and missed out on a playoff appearance in 2005 because of tie-breaker.

Gagarin will continue to teach in Melissa and work with student-athletes through the football program at the seventh and eighth grade level.

“I was convinced that Gagarin was good for kids four years ago, and I’m still convinced of that today,” Melissa superintendent Jason Smith said. “I think this transition will be good for him personally and I know our children in the feeder program at the junior high will benefit from his leadership and support.”
