from Houston Chronicle:

SOUTH BEND, IND. - New York Jets defensive backs coach Corwin Brown will be introduced as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator today, and former Irish player Ron Powlus will be named quarterbacks coach.

Brown will replace Rick Minter, while Powlus will replace Peter Vaas, two people familiar with the hiring said Thursday.

They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. Minter and Vaas were in their second stints at Notre Dame.

Coach Charlie Weis called a news conference for today to introduce the new coaches.

Brown, 36, has been defensive backs coach with the Jets for the past three seasons. He played for the New England Patriots and New York Jets from 1993-98.

Powlus was a four-year starter at quarterback for the Irish and has been the director of personnel development the past two seasons.

• West Virginia's Slaton sidelined — West Virginia running back Steve Slaton had surgery on his right wrist and will miss spring practice.

Slaton injured the wrist during the 2005 season. A pin was inserted in the wrist during surgery this week, coach Rich Rodriguez said.

He also hurt his left elbow and wrist in a Nov. 2 loss at Louisville and played sparingly in the Gator Bowl after suffering a deep thigh bruise during practice.

Despite the injuries, Slaton set a school record with 1,744 yards as a sophomore and was named a first team All-American.

• UCLA coordinator fired — Jim Svoboda, criticized this season for conservative play-calling, was fired as UCLA's offensive coordinator.

The Bruins went 7-6 in 2006, losing to Florida State 44-27 in the Emerald Bowl. The team averaged 23 points per game. A year earlier, UCLA averaged more than 39 points in a 10-2 season.

Svoboda, 46, was UCLA's quarterbacks coach in 2004-05 and added the coordinator duties this past season.

• Grambling picks Broadway — Rod Broadway took over Grambling State's historic football program Thursday, leaving North Carolina Central to coach the Tigers.

Broadway replaces Melvin Spears, fired Dec. 18 after a 3-8 season.

Broadway led North Carolina Central to an 11-1 record last season and its second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. After a 4-6 mark in 2003, his next three teams won eight or more games for a four-year record of 33-11.

• Coach changes mind — Ron West, hired by West Virginia as assistant head coach and offensive line coach, has decided to return to Clemson.

The move leaves the Mountaineers with three assistant coaching vacancies.
