There's a bit of discussion on texaaaasports.com on the GPISD board meeting last night at which some people showed up to try and have legendary coach George Harris fired...but a lot more showed up to support Coach Harris. Gp83 can elaborate more on the meeting, since he gave a speech in support of Coach Harris at the meeting.

Dont administrators decide the fate of coaches and teachers?

One would think

but GP is a different animal. The administration is not wildly popular with the district population, and since Harris serves as Head Coach and AD, he is directly subservant to the superintendant. The superintendant may be more inclined to side with popular opinion in this district because his job could be the next one on the line.

I've heard that the same thing happened in G-P with Harris' predecessor.

Some variation of it, yes...

I thought it was wrong of them to fire Holt at that time and I think they will be wrong if they fire Harris, even if Harris' records are trending downwards and Holt's were trending upwards.

Loyalty lies in winning at GP...

Harris' records at GP have been:

2001 - 8-3
2002 - 13-2
2003 - 9-4
2004 - 13-1
2005 - 6-5
2006 - 4-6

He was also a very successful coach at 2A Refugio before that.

His predecessor, Tim Holt, had 3 seasons with GP:

1998 - 2-8
1999 - 5-5
2000 - 9-2 *asked to resign*

What is Holt's record at Big Spring? How many coaches has he gone through there? Tough to work for!!!

George Harris' record at Refugio from 1992-2000:

106-17-1 (3 State Semifinals Appearances)

I'm not sure what his record is there, but he also coached at Taylor between his stints at GP and the Spring.

I've heard that he might be getting the shaft as well. A lot of people that I have talked to are wanting him gone.

It won't be closed. The other thread was closed because the question had been answered. Period.

A close friend of mine works for Coach Harris at GP. He has nothing but respect for him. I hope it all works out. Sometimes good coaches have bad years. BODY OF WORK is what matters.

Coach Harris doesn't have to justify anything - he's a well respected solid coach. He probably pi$$ed off a few people for the RIGHT reasons. Ever village has idiots and most villagers know who they are.

I don't think Coach Harris walks on water, but I know if the school board does "bonehead" this up, he'll have NO PROBLEM finding another community/school/team to lead.

Last I checked it was the board and superintendent that determine school employee's fate, not two or three morons from the public. It just seems that Portland has a few more than some of the surrounding towns. Those nimrods need to see that although GP did not do as well as they would like, they had kids working hard and incurred some setbacks, such as injuries.

Just a young team. Yes we had 33 seniors, but not starting quality. We'll be better next year and send Harris out with a bang.

SinFan and Sinton66. Isnt it the rule to keep the content of PMs private?

I know Coach Harris personally and he is a great coach and great person. I remember when in high school he was coaching track. Of course it was his players he worked for and supported but what stood out was he was also concerned about the opponents and treated them with respect.

I know how you feel Haunta but those "idiots" that you speak about have their right to have their say even if they are wrong if they are taxpayers especially in the G-P ISD. The main thing is to be sure they are a small minority.
