Not really. More of a social movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism) while also serving as an antithesis to capitalism. Communism has existed predominantly under the reign of dictators, which I doubt is what Marx had in mind. The whole idea just gets a bad rap because of the Soviets and Cold War. "What, you wanna protect worker's rights and share the wealth? You're obviously a Jewnazigaytard!"

Wrong again! Communism is actually a economic system, sometimes called a planned economy. Most countries with communist economies are authoritarian (oligarchy, dictatorships).

Being the opposite of capitalism, also known as a market economy, would also make it [communism] an economic system, which was implied in my first remark. I'm glad you recognize it as just that, as opposed to an actual government, unluck many others here and elsewhere.

You want to pay everybody the same? What about people like teachers who enhance the minds of tomorrow? Or what about the military, the police, the fireman, the people who put themselves in harms way every day compared to somebody that sits at a computer all day in a safe office? That might be one reason why communism doesn't work. Yes, it's a great concept, but at the same time, there's too many things that would prevent it from working.

Yes, it's a great concept, but at the same time, there's too many things that would prevent it from working. great example however that exists in capitalist economies as well. do all those noble jobs have less importance than a athlete? stock broker(safe in office)?, lawyer? a better example IMO would be when all is finally equalized a group will only be as good as its lowest performing member, all things equal of course. total equality is not a good thing. on a other note, its human nature to covet, socialism and communism operate on a utopian thought, one that does not exist in nature or humanity. just my opinion however.

Well, I'm of the belief that ALL young adults should commit to manditory military service for at least one year of their life. This would assure that law-makers and corporate blow-hards think twice before sending their very own blood overseas to defend this nation.

As for military, police, firemen and teachers, they already get paid squat. How does the current system help them any? I think they'd feel better about being paid squat if they new that the people in offices were also being paid squat.

I realize my thoughts are utopian. That's why you won't see me running for office any time soon. I get enough riducule here. I don't need it from my offline community. :p

Dang it Carter didn't you pay attention in class last year? Socialism is also a form of economy, sometimes called a mixed economy. Those Frogs we love to hate so much practice socialism. Democratic government, but socilaist economy! That may be what the problem with them is, they're confused!

charlesrixey

communism was a mixture of things

Bentham and Mill developed Utilitarianism, and Marx answered with a somewhat similar idea called 'deontology'

applying these two principles to economics produced socialism, fascism and communism, over the course of 150 years or so.
