Palestine’s Larry Jackson had been quiet for three quarters, sitting on the bench much of the time with foul trouble Tuesday night.

But Jackson made up for it in the fourth quarter.

The Palestine junior scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner at the buzzer as the Wildcats defeated Chapel Hill 81-79 at Wildcat Gymnasium.

“This was a big win for us going into district,” Palestine head coach Jamie Driskell said. “Everyone who played tonight was involved in this win.”

In what became a heavy-weight battle, Chapel Hill threw a devastating blow when the Bulldogs’ T.J. Riley made a three pointer with 14 seconds left to cap a five-point run and tie the game at 79-79.

But the punch only stunned Palestine, as the Wildcats retaliated.

After a timeout, Palestine brought the ball down court against minimal defensive pressure and then Greg Anderson got the ball behind curve of the three-point line.

Anderson waited until six seconds left, then drove towards the basket, stopped and passed it to Jackson, who was posted up. He made a spin move and with less than a second left, he hit the layup and by the time the ball hit the floor the buzzer had sounded and Palestine celebrated the win.

“The biggest concern during the timeout was making sure we got the ball inbounds because they were putting pressure on us that caused a few turnovers,” Driskell said. “Once we got the ball into our side of the court, we wanted to take the last shot and we got the ball to Larry, and they did not have a guy to cover him.”

Chapel Hill (16-6) did not have an answer for Jackson at all in the fourth quarter.

“Larry struggled at the beginning of the game but when the fourth quarter started, I and some of the players asked for him to step up,” Driskell said. “We got to have kids like Larry step up when we need it the most.”

After Palestine had as much as a 13-point lead in the third quarter, Chapel Hill rallied and eventually took the lead in the fourth quarter.

The teams traded the lead until Jackson, off an Anderson pass, made a layup. Patrick Turner followed with a three pointer from the corner for a 67-63 lead.

After a Chapel Hill score, Turner would make the first of two free throws, but on the second-shot miss, Adorian Arthur got the offensive rebound and putback to give Palestine a 70-65 lead.

Palestine increased the lead to 73-66 when Jackson had a three-point play, but Chapel Hill would score the next four points to cut the lead to 73-70.

Jackson responded with a jumper from the paint and then Anderson had a putback with just over a minute left to give Palestine a 77-72 lead.

With 50 seconds left, Arthur made a shot from the paint to give Palestine a 79-74 lead.

However, Chapel Hill scored then got the steal off the press. After two missed shots and a block shot by Jackson, Riley got the ball at the top of the key and made the three pointer to tie the game and set up Palestine’s last-second win.

Anderson played a big role in getting Palestine off to a quick start in the first half. Anderson made four first-half three pointers and scored 18 of his 24 points in the first half.

“When Greg starts hitting threes, it gets our kids going,” Driskell said. “It makes our defense that much better and puts a spark in our team.”

Anderson’s third three pointer of the first half came with two minutes to play and gave Palestine a 42-33 lead. The Wildcats took their first double-digit lead when Anderson made his fourth three pointer of the half on Palestine’s next possession.

Anderson, who scored Palestine’s final eight points of the first half, had a putback to give Palestine a 47-37 halftime lead.

Chapel Hill hurt itself with poor shooting from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs were 12-of-32 while Palestine, with limited foul shots, were 7-of-11.

Palestine will start District 19-3A play Friday at Madisonville. The Wildcats have two straight wins after losing three straight.

“In the last three games, even in the loss to Lufkin, we have played hard,” Driskell said. “We need to play like that as we go into district.”
