Friends, teachers and parents gathered Tuesday night at New Hope Baptist Church in Weatherford to pray for Willie B. Fielder, a star football player at Weatherford High School who remained hospitalized in critical condition after a wreck Monday.

Fielder, 17, breathed on his own for a few minutes Tuesday morning after doctors at John Peter Smith Hospital briefly removed a breathing apparatus, said Jeff Brazzell, his cousin and a summer youth track coach.

"He was off the breathing machine for only five minutes," Brazzell said. "He's no better, no worse. We just have to keep on hoping and praying. It's in God's hands."

In addition to head injuries, Fielder, nicknamed B.B., has pelvic fractures and kidney injuries, Brazzell said.

"He means so much to this community," Brazzell said. "He has touched so many lives."

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior running back was named Offensive MVP for District 4-5A this season. He led the area in Class 5A rushing, with 1,327 yards, despite missing two games with an injury. He scored 17 touchdowns.

The collision occurred about 3 p.m. as Fielder, who was driving a 1997 Dodge Avenger to track practice, turned north onto South Main Street from Cleburne Avenue. A southbound Chevrolet pickup hit the car in the driver's door, police said.
