And I heard that Ripken would have been unanimous if some idiot writer had not left his ballot blank on purpose.

Probably Bill Conlan of the Philadelphia Enquirer. He's the only one who didn't vote for Nolan Ryan.

Gwynn, Ripken elected to Hall of Fame
ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire fell far short in his first try for the Hall of Fame, picked by 23.5 percent of voters while Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. easily gained baseball's highest honor.

Tarnished by accusations of steroid use, McGwire appeared on 128 of a record 545 ballots in voting released Tuesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Ripken was picked by 537 voters, appearing on 98.5 percent of ballots, falling just short of the record percentage of 98.84 set by Tom Seaver when he was selected on 425 of 430 ballots in 1992.

Gwynn was just behind with 532 votes, 97.6 percent.

Goose Gossage was third with 71.2 percent of the vote, falling just short of the 75 percent needed.

The induction will take place July 29 in Cooperstown.

Who cares about the standaround hall of fame. Well since it was clearly spelled out in the title what this thread was about, I guess you didn't have to read it, now did you?

Some people care, FYI.

Admit it! You care or you wouldn't be looking at this thread. You secretly love baseball. It's okay. :)

Congrats to both, well-deserved. Idiot writers tick me off with their agendas.

Tony Gwynn was the best natural hitter of our generation (& Ted Williams agreed). I mean: .338 career BA, 8 batting titles, 5 Gold Gloves, walked over 700 times & struck out barely over 400 times in 20 years. Amazing hitter who showed he could play long ball in 1998 with the Padres too. Best bat control I have ever seen. Gwynn, Billy Doran, & Robin Yount were the reasons I wore #19 in hs & college ball.

Yes, no HOF for Mark McGwire. Besides the steroid scandal, look at his #s. He had just over 1600 hits only & more than 500 of those were HRs. Career avg. was horrible. Not a great run producer. below avg. fielder. IMO not a HOF regardless of scandal. Much like Dave Kingman, boom or bust.

Well there's a name I haven't heard in a good long while. Pretty darn good player though from the recollections I have of him.

Billy Doran was a darn good ballplayer & played hard every day (2B, switch-hitter). Hard-nosed, team leader, good hitter & great fielder. One of my all-time favorites for the way he played the game. If SS Dickie Thon had not gotten hurt in the beaning (& he never was the same), they would have been a great combo for many years together.
