Both of these men were unrestricted world Checkers champions. They were also great teachers and wrote books on the game. Today one can become a good checker player whether for one or in tournaments. There are computer games available for one to develope and also available sites on the internet.
Millard Hopper wrote good checkers book which includes Win at Checkers. He lived mainly in the first part of the last century.
Tom Wiswell was a great checkers player and was in the army in WW2 and amazed everyone with his ability in the game. He was a banker by profession as well as a worlc champion in checkers. He wrote many books on the game such as Checkers Made Easy.

Unfortunately biographies on these men are not available to a great extent but their books can be purchased by ebay and other sources and you can easlily borrow a copy from your local library if available and if not inter library loans are an option. If you desire to be a better than average checkers player then if you can master at least one of the books by each of the great teachers and start playing against the computer you should reach your goal.
