Now that the season is over, we have hindsight to look back and decide somewhat more objectively which teams really were the best. My top 10 is listed below and hopefully not too complicated of an explanation of why I ranked them where I did.

There were no undefeated teams in 3A this year as Liberty Hill knocked off the last few unbeaten teams singlehandedly with wins over 13-0 Giddings, 14-0 Hondo and 15-0 Celina in the final 3 weeks of the playoffs! The only other 1 loss teams for the year other than the 3 listed above were Cuero 12-1, WO-S 11-1, Dallas Madison 10-1, Decatur 10-1 and Gilmer 10-1.

There are only 5 teams that can connect a path of wins over every other 3A team in the state (the 7 degrees of separation kind of thing): Liberty Hill, Wimberley and Cuero (since both have wins against LH), Giddings (with a win over Wimberley), and Hondo (with a win over Wimberley). None of the other 170 3A schools in the state can claim a win of any sort over any of those 5 whereas all 5 of those programs can trace a direct line of beating a team who beat a team who beat all 170 other schools. Since the only losses the above 5 teams had for the year were at the hands of each other, the top echelon in my rankings comes mostly from these 5. Celina and WO-S are the only teams who's only losses were at the hands of one of the 5. Every other 3A team in the state suffered losses to teams in the lower echelon.

Here are my Top 10, followed by important games of the season that I took in to consideration, more recent games counting more.

1. Liberty Hill (13-2): (State Champs), week 16 - beat Celina by 3, week 15 - beat Hondo by 16, week 14 - beat Giddings by 7, week 5 - lost to Wimberley by 4, week 4 - lost to Cuero by 4
2. Celina (15-1): week 16 - lost to LH by 3, week 1 - beat Robinson by 28
3. Giddings (13-1): week 14 - lost to LH by 7, week 12 - beat WOS by 8, week 1 - beat Wimberley by 21
4. Hondo (14-1): week 15 - lost to LH by 16, week 14 - beat Wimberley by 7
5. Wimberley (12-2): week 14 - lost to Hondo by 7, week 13 - beat Cuero by 22, week 5 - beat Liberty Hill by 4, week 3 - beat Liberty-Eylau by 28, week 1 - lost to Giddings by 21
6(t). WO-S (11-1): week 12 - lost to Giddings by 8
6(t). Cuero (12-1): week 13 - lost to Wimberley by 22, week 4 - beat Liberty Hill by 4
8. Liberty-Eylau (12-3): (State Champs) week 15 - beat Robinson by 1, week 11 - beat Gilmer by 3, week 10 - lost to Atlanta by 3, week 5 - lost to Mount Pleasant by 8, week 4 - lost to Wimberley by 21
9. Robinson (12-3): week 15 - lost to L-E by 1, week 7 - lost to La Vega by 7, week 1 - lost to Celina by 28
10. Gilmer (10-1): week 11 - lost to L-E by 3

Anybody else care to share their top 10?

It's hard to assess rankings to teams when I think it's safe to assume that most people would say that Gilmer would probably beat any of the 9 teams ahead of them 7 or 8 out of 10 times if they were to play. Gilmer 2006 is arguably the greatest group of talent to play together in 3A. Results are a different story... ;)

They blew out this year's 2A state champ and last year's 3A champs, Tatum, along with 16-3A champs Atlanta (who beat Liberty-Eylau) and Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman.

Not a bad resume.

I went by the most objective stat you can use in these kind of comparisons which is head-to-head results... The two Division I Finalists lost to a combined 4 Division II playoff teams whereas the combined 8 Division II quarterfinalists had only one loss to a Division I team (Decatur over Vernon).

Interesting rankings, but at this house, we are satisfied with the length of LE's season LOL. As with every team, the W/L record does not reflect things that go on during the season. Injuries to key starters influenced losses to Wimberly and Mt Pleasant, and the district title game with Atlanta is almost always our most hotly contested battle. We won in OT last year by a FG, and lost in OT this year by 3. We usually have to throw out the rankings/predictions whenever we play them.

Here are the only rankings that matter:

#!. Liberty-Eylau..........State Champs Div. !
#!. Liberty Hill..............State Champs Div. 2

No one can equal what these 2 teams did and no one can be talked about in the same breath as these 2 teams PERIOD.

Centexhorn

What dogdad said.

If I ranked teams it would be

1) Liberty Hill
2) L.E.
3) Celina
4) Robinson

LH beat Celina in the very last seconds by a FG when it very easily could have gone the other way, when Celina was stopped on 4th and 1.

LE won when Robinson went for 2 instead of OT when they had momentum going.

Those 4 teams were almost interchangable at the end and they are my top 4 teams.

Gilmer was my favorite all year because they have 8-9 D1 talents on offense alone, but with Texas HS football being so strong , they couldnt win it all even in 3A, a testament to the fact football is a TEAM sport and not a talent sport alone.
