Dumbo just e-mailed me these pictures of the deer he shot this morning. It's officially a 9 point as one of the small points on the back right of the rack was partially broken off.

nah...I didn't mention that the deer weighs about 743 lbs. So let that thought put Dumbo's weight back into perspective! ;)

9 points is a good size rack. It could be a bit wider and I'm betting it would be a much bigger buck in a year or two. I'm not sure on the overall size of the deer as none of the pics that he sent me showed the full deer. He said it wasn't exactly a "clean kill" as he didn't hit exactly where he was aiming. I won't go into the details though! ;)

I dang sure did hit where I was aiming. I shoot to kill. I had originally gone out there to shoot a doe since my friend's place we were at has way too many, but he was an older one than the other the other buck that was with him so bam. We didn't think he'd be getting much bigger so we figured why not. The one that was with him was already a big 8-pointer and he's was only about 2 1/2 years old. My friend wanted to take him next year since he'll probably be a lot bigger. He probably weighed 100 or so I'm guessing. We didn't score him or anything. It was great though. Deer hunting is usually my worst nightmare since I can't sit still but we were in the blind long enough to get some light and there they were.

Rita, just put the picture in with the state-bound shirt thread. I only made one M&G this year so not many people know me. I don't know how to say this, but I'm kind of a big deal. People KNOW me.

There are something like 61 counties in Texas now that require the Deer to have at least 13 inch inside spread. This is to keep people from shooting young deer. To each his own though. When I didnt get to hunt very much I didnt care. If it had antlers and he could be seen through the scope i shot it.

ahh....I haven't been hunting in a few years so I haven't kept up with the new laws. I guess that's good to know in the future. I wonder if the deer will freeze long enough for me to measure him.

isn't that the truth?
Speaking of hunting - husband went the last couple of mornings and of course the feeder was out of corn - but that's another story - but he said he went to a different blind just at daybreak just for grins and saw 5 beautiful turkeys - just standing there - each one of them was completely fanned out. He's going to take the camera next time, that would make a really neat picture...

A good point of reference is if the antlers appear to be wider than the ears than it is probably legal.

Agree with Darren... great tips for judging Deer at a distance...

1.) look for spread wider than the ears at full alert... good deer.

2.) look at the diameter of the anter base and compare to eyes. If they are the same or bigger, good deer.

Those are just two quick rules of thumb I have been taught and use.

Good job, RMAC... I am still stalking a nice 10 pt that keeps shifting trails on me... maybe Friday PM right before the cool front.........

I don't think its "hunting" when you feed them corn at a certain spot and they come back to eat and you shoot them from a deer blind:rolleyes:
