Ty Branyon Named Aggie Heart Award Winner at 2006 Texas A&M Football Banquet

For Immediate Release
Saturday, December 9, 2006

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Ty Branyon, a senior quarterback from Bowie High School in Austin, Texas, was named the Aggie Heart Award winner, the highest honor for a Texas A&M senior football player. The award was presented at the annual Texas A&M football banquet held Saturday in The Zone Club at Kyle Field to honor the 2006 Aggie football team.

The Heart Award is presented to a senior who has completed his eligibility and displays the intangibles such as effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, leadership and courage. All the awards, including the Heart Award, are voted upon by the players of the football team.

“Ty Branyon is a great example of the Aggie Heart Award,” Aggie Head Coach Dennis Franchione said. “He is very deserving of this honor. To be selected by your teammates is the greatest compliment anyone can hope for. He has been a member of the Leadership Council and the players respect him and we feel like we have an extra coach on the sidelines.”

The offensive MVP was sophomore quarterback Stephen McGee from Burnet. McGee is one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the country passing for over 2,100 yards and rushing for more than 600 yards. He is on pace to break the single season completion percentage record completing over 61% of his passes. A member of the Leadership Council, McGee was also named to the All-Big 12 Academic honor team.

The offensive line MVP is junior center Cody Wallace from Cuero. Wallace has started 23 straight games for the Aggies and he usually makes the calls along the offensive line. Another member of the Leadership Council, Wallace was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America All-Region selection as well as being named first-team All-Big 12 by a couple of publications.

The defensive MVP is senior linebacker Justin Warren from Tyler. Warren has led the Aggies in tackles the past two seasons and he achieved a feat unmatched in Aggie linebacker history—he started at linebacker as a true freshman in his very first game. He has earned All-Big 12 honors the past two seasons.

The defensive line MVP is junior defensive end Chris Harrington from Houston. Harrington led the team in sacks with 7.5 and he recorded 11.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for losses of 64 yards. He has been named first-team All-Big 12 by several publications.

The special teams MVP is sophomore defensive back Alton Dixon from Lufkin. Dixon excelled on several special team units and graded out extremely well in every category.

The offensive work team MVPs were all true freshmen this year. Wide receiver Kenny Brown from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, quarterback Jerrod Johnson from Humble, and running back Cornell Tarrant from Dallas. The offensive work team prepares the Aggie defense each week for the upcoming opponent and all three of these young men stood out to their teammates and coaches.

The defensive work team MVPs had a mixture of young and old. Defensive back Ben Bitner is a junior walkon defensive back from Round Rock, while redshirt freshman defensive lineman Paul Freeney from Houston, and true freshman defensive lineman Leslie Ray from Midland helped give the Aggie offense a good look at the upcoming opponent’s defense.

The Aggies are preparing for the 2006 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl which will be played Dec. 28 in San Diego, California.
