Hole-y Aledo! Dawgs cruise to state title game

WACO – The storybook season of the Copperas Cove football team continues to add chapters as the Dawgs knocked off the Aledo Bearcats 35-12 in a rather unsuspenseful Division I-4A semifinal Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.

This marks the first time in school history that the Bulldawg football team will be playing for a state championship in any classification.

Cove plays San Antonio Alamo Heights next Saturday in the championship game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Alamo Heights (13-1) defeated previously unbeaten Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated 42-14 Saturday night at Round Rock ISD Stadium in the other semifinal. The Mules haven't lost since dropping their season opener, 27-19, at home against Georgetown.

"Today, I thought that we really played a full 48 minutes against a ballclub that has a dynamic offense," Copperas Cove coach Jack Welch said. "This season has been kind of like a storybook, where every week we continued to tell the kids to play a full game – 48 minutes. It finally came to fruition today."

The turning point in a game that was close initially came when Cove, leading 15-12, used some trickery to score its third touchdown. Then the defense took over and frustrated the Bearcats the rest of the afternoon, rejecting two long drives deep into Cove territory.

Quarterback Robert Griffin set the wheels in motion late in the second quarter when he scrambled out of the pocket and completed a 30-yard pass for a first down to running back Jerrard Millsap. Griffin followed that with a pitch to Logan Brock, who in turn passed to a streaking Donn'ell Greer across the center of the field for a 38-yard touchdown.

Rather than attempt a 37-yard field goal with a stiff wind to its back, Aledo chose to go for it on fourth-and-two and was stopped for no gain by a bunch of Bulldawgs with just 30 seconds remaining in the half.

Two Millsap runs of 21 and 12 yards gave the Dawgs another scoring opportunity. Griffin found Rashad Hawk on a 42-yard pass and, after spiking the ball with two seconds left, Kyle Matthews gave the Dawgs a 25-12 lead with a 22-yard chip-shot field goal.

Early on, it appeared that Copperas Cove (12-2) was going to be in a dogfight for 48 minutes as Aledo took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in just 2:37.

Jack Bryant capped the six-play drive by hauling in Cole Loftin's first pass of the game and tip-toed 60 yards past the Bulldawgs on the sideline.

Aledo (12-2) missed the extra-point attempt but led 6-0.

Copperas Cove responded with an impressive 12-play, 52-yard drive on its first possession.

Brian Jones began the drive by losing 3 yards on an end-around, but ended up sealing the envelope with a 9-yard touchdown reception from Griffin with 4:01 left in the first quarter.

Griffin was 4-of-5 passing for 50 yards during the drive. Mathews followed with the extra point and Cove had a brief 7-6 lead.

Once again, the mammoth offensive line for the Bearcats moved Dawg defenders out of the way en route to an 11-play scoring drive in which Aledo never threw a pass. Loftin was the main workhorse on the drive, carrying the ball eight times for 73 yards and gave his team the lead when he scored from the 4.

In an attempt to make up for the failed extra point, Aledo chose to go for the two-point conversion, but was denied as the Bulldawg defense stiffened.

Unlike their first drive, which featured Griffin passing the ball, the Bulldawgs began establishing the run on their second possession of the game. Millsap, who ran for 154 yards on 17 carries, was the beneficiary of some large holes opened up by his front five and broke a handoff 70 yards up the middle of the Bearcat defense for another Cove touchdown.

Leading 13-12, Welch called for a two-point conversion attempt and it paid off when tight end Logan Brock made a one-handed catch of Griffin's pass.

Both teams came out empty with their first opportunity of the second half, and when Kenton Day intercepted a pass intended for Hawk, it appeared that the Bearcats had gained momentum.

A 22-yard run by Loftin on third-and-20 pushed Aledo across midfield, but Loftin then threw an ill-advised pass toward the middle of the field and Cove's Joseph Leary swept in and intercepted the ball as time was winding down in third quarter.

The Dawgs appeared to score again as Hawk leapt over the outstretched arms of Day on the first play of the final period, but the officials ruled that Hawk had pushed off.

All was not lost for Cove, though, as Mathews connected on his second field goal of the game, a 37-yarder.

The Bearcats made one last push on the ensuing drive. Loftin's running led his team to the Cove 4-yard line, but once again the Dawg defense stopped Aledo on fourth down and ended any hopes of a comeback. Loftin finished the game with 137 yards on 23 carries.

Stopping Loftin on that fourth down play refreshed the Dawgs hopes of winning a state championship.

"Their (Aledo's) offensive line is so good, but our defensive line played the best that it has all year," Welch said. "The bottom line, though, is he (Loftin) is the real deal. He ran real hard tonight and is a good ball player."

Millsap closed the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run, his second of the night, with 52 seconds remaining.

Hawk, Cove exploit chink in Aleda pass coverage

WACO – The Copperas Cove Bulldawgs found a hole in the Aledo Bearcats defense and gave their fans something they had become accustomed to seeing throughout the regular season Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.

The Bulldawgs opened up the offense and went to the long ball more, specifically to Rashad Hawk in Cove's 35-12 triumph over Aledo in the Division 1-4A semifinals.

Confined to only 35 yards on seven catches by opposing defenses in the first three games of the playoffs, Hawk broke out with a five-catch, 84-yard performance just when his team needed him the most.

Despite nearly breaking the century mark in yardage for just the second time this season (the other being his 152-yard, four-reception performance against Killeen), Hawk remained even-keeled in acknowledging that Cove is only attacking areas that are able to be attacked.

"I think in the other games in the playoffs, the deep route just wasn't open," Hawk said. "Today, we found cracks in their coverage and I was able to exploit them."

From Cove's opening possession it was evident that the Bulldawgs found a mismatch that they could exploit. Robert Griffin connected with Hawk on the second play from scrimmage with a 16-yard pass and the two remained on the same page for the rest of the day.

That was not the only play that Hawk came up huge on for the Dawgs in the opening drive. Hawk hauled in his second 16-yard reception of the drive on a critical third-and-eight play from the Bearcat 26-yard line, setting up Cove's first score.

The Aledo defense held Hawk in check for the remainder of the first half, with the exception of his 42-yard grab to set up Kyle Mathews' first field goal.

He finished his evening with two short catches in the second half, after the contest had already been decided.

The prospect of playing in the state championship game is no longer a dream but a reality for Hawk, a Texas Tech pledge, and he hopes to continue producing big in the final game of his illustrious high school career.

"A lot of seniors do not get the opportunity to play for a state championship and I am going to cherish the moment," he said. "I hope that I continue to play good and that the team gets its state championship."

WACO - Having won their first three playoff games by an average of five points, the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs were just ready to explode. And the Aledo Bearcats simply couldn’t stop them.

Cove rolled to a 35-12 win over Aledo in a Class 4A Division I state semifinal Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium to advance to its first-ever state championship game.

The Region II-champion Bulldawgs (12-2) will play Region IV winner San Antonio Alamo Heights (13-1) - which beat Region III winner Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated 42-14 later Saturday - at 7 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio’s Alamodome.

“It’s been our goal the whole season,” Cove coach Jack Welch said of winning a state title. “Now we just have to go finish the job. I don’t even care who we play. We just praise God that we are playing the second week in December.”

Early, it looked like Region I champion Aledo (12-2) was going to put up a valiant fight against the Dawgs when Cole Loftin hit Jack Bryant for a 60-yard touchdown pass. But when the extra-point try bounced off the upright, the entire complexion of the game changed.

Cove tied the game on its first possession when quarterback Robert Griffin hit Brian Jones for an 8-yard touchdown pass, and Kyle Mathews’ extra point gave the Dawgs their first lead.

So when Loftin scored from 4 yards out early in the second, the Bearcats elected to go for two points to go up 14-7. But Cove’s Tanner Brock sacked Loftin to deny Aledo the points, and the rest was all Cove.

Jerrard Millsap scored on a 70-yard run to give the Bulldawgs the lead for good at 13-12, and Logan Brock brought in a two-point pass from Griffin to make it 15-12. On Cove’s next possession, Brock found Don’Nell Greer for a 40-yard TD pass to extend it to 22-12.

Aledo looked like it might make some noise late in the half when Brady Thomas came in at quarterback and led the Bearcats from their 33 to Cove’s 20. But Thomas threw incomplete on fourth down, and Cove got the ball back with 30 seconds left and just one timeout.

Instead of taking a knee, Welch decided to run a delay handoff to Millsap, who picked up 21 of his game-high 159 yards.

ALEDO-COPPERAS COVE NOTES
Aledo has tough go at cracking defense
By STEFAN STEVENSON
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

WACO - All season long the Aledo Bearcats have been able to manhandle their opponents at the line of scrimmage.

And at the start of Saturday's Class 4A Division I state semifinal at Waco ISD Stadium against Copperas Cove, Aledo appeared to be, once again, the stronger team up front.

But after allowing Aledo touchdowns on its first two possessions, Copperas Cove's defense clamped down and limited the Bearcats to only 157 yards rushing for the game as the Bulldawgs defeated Aledo 35-12. The rushing total was the Bearcats' second lowest of the season.

When asked if Copperas Cove was the best defense they had faced, Aledo coach Tim Buchanan didn't hesitate.

"By far," he said. "Offensively, defensively, special teams; That's a great football team. They did a good job of scheming up front which took a little bit of the aggressiveness out of our offensive line because we weren't sure where they were going to be."

The Copperas Cove defensive line was able to muscle their way for tackles and when that failed their speed more than made up for it.

"I knew how fast they were, those guys can run," Buchanan said.

Although Cole Loftin, Aledo's leading rusher this season, gained 147 yards, Ryan McGuire was held to only 21 yards -- his lowest of the year. He was also hit early in the game and couldn't lift his left arm above his shoulder.

"We just never could get Ryan on track," Buchanan said. "We had some bad snaps that put us in a hole, and we had to throw the football."

Aledo built an early 12-7 lead, but the Bulldawgs scored the next 28 points.

Loftin finished with 149 yards rushing, but only 42 in the second half. After Aledo fell behind, he was used as a receiver on some series.

Said Loftin, "They switched on every play and coming in we knew they would. But when it came right down to it they just flew to the ball and made our guys miss."

Briefly

Waco ISD Stadium was near its 11,500 spectator capacity.

Aledo coach Tim Buchanan, who grew up in Killeen, which is 11 miles from Copperas Cove, said after the game that he had never lost to Copperas Cove while growing up. Saturday's game was the first time that Aledo and Copperas Cove had ever played each other in football.

Bearcats offense stalls in 2nd half

Aledo quarterback Cole Loftin rumbled for 107 yards in the first half but only 40 in the second.

WACO -- Emotionally and physically drained, Michael Wilcoxon held it together and held his head up high.

The defensive lineman from Aledo had just endured his first loss in the last 10 games -- and just the second of the season -- 35-12 at the hands of Copperas Cove on Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.

But he was proud of the Bearcats for making it to the Class 4A Division I state semifinals, even if it was just one game shy of their goal of playing for a state championship.

"When you play with your heart, that's all you can do," said Wilcoxon, a senior who has committed to play at Texas. "I'm definitely proud. We set our goals high."

Copperas Cove (12-2) moves on to play the Lamar Consolidated-Alamo Heights winner in the Class 4A Division I state championship next week. It's the Bulldawgs' first-ever trip to the football state championship.

Aledo quarterback Cole Loftin had 147 rushing yards on 23 carries, including 107 in the first half. He had a rushing and a passing touchdown, and he caught three passes for 19 yards.

Cove RB Jerrard Millsap rushed 16 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Rashad Hawk and Don'Nell Greer combined for nine catches for 165 yards and another touchdown.

For Aledo (12-2), Copperas Cove's team speed and big-play ability proved too tough to handle.

The Bearcats and Bulldawgs were neck-and-neck for the first 14 minutes, and it was mostly because of big plays. Loftin found Jack Bryant for a 60-yard touchdown pass, and Millsap scored on a 70-yard run for Cove. But because of a missed extra point and failed 2-point conversion, Cove led 15-12 with 9:52 to go in the second quarter.

Aledo, trailing 22-12 after Greer's 38-yard touchdown catch, had to punt on its third possession and gained only 55 of its 215 total first-half yards after its first two scores.

The Bearcats drove to the Cove 20-yard line with 36 seconds left in the first half, but a pass from backup QB Brady Thomas intended for Loftin sailed high out of the end zone on fourth-and-2.

Cove marched 75 yards in 30 seconds to end the half with a field goal and a 25-12 lead.

"We don't put points on the board, and then they go down and put three up," Aledo coach Tim Buchanan said. "That kind of took the wind out of us, and I don't know if we ever recovered offensively.

"That was a big turning point in the game."

Aledo adjusted well defensively after halftime, holding Cove to 117 yards compared to a 326-yard first half.

But the Bearcats had to go away from their ground game, which averaged more than 300 yards per game during the regular season, and they couldn't get much going through the air.

"We dug too big of a hole for our offense to get out of," senior Bobby Whan said. "They had impeccable speed and shut us down in every way. They are a very good team."
