CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Beachgoers in Corpus Christi, Texas were in for a big surprise this week when a large shark washed up on shore.

Biologists said they don't know why the nine-foot long Mako shark ended up on shore. They said the shark had died recently, but did not have any visible wounds.

The 500-pound shark was taken to a Texas A&M University lab for tests

Am I totally off base or isn't "El Nino" usually responsible for washing several fish upshore? I thought this was one of the ways that it was first recognized. And as I've read, "El Nino" is supposed to return this winter...wonder if that has anything to do with the shark?

Several years ago I went to Corpus Christi to go fishing and when I arrived there was a 10' long 350' bull shark hanging on the scales at a bait house. That was one huge fish. The guy that caught it told me that he was using 5' jackfish as bait. Man I would be happy to catch that kind of bait

I have heard that the Harte Research Institute is excited for the opportunity to study what could have caused a Mako shark, not normally seen in the western Gulf, to beach himself near TAMU-CC.

This is why I don't like going out into the ocean... way too many things that can kill me that I can't see coming. Rivers are usually muddy but if you know what to look for, you are usually fine. I don't know what to look for in the ocean except for the "Jaws" fin.
