Who would you rather see run the UT offense in the Alamo Bowl?

Texas makes QB contingency plans
McCoy is healing, but he's the only scholarship quarterback Longhorns will have for bowl game.
Monday, December 04, 2006

Sometime today, Texas coach Mack Brown and offensive coordinator Greg Davis will talk by phone to make contingency plans for their quarterback position for the Alamo Bowl.

They may be necessary.

The injured Colt McCoy, right, is healing, but he's the only scholarship quarterback the Longhorns will have available for the Alamo Bowl.

Longhorn quarterback Colt McCoy is rehabilitating a pinched nerve in his neck, and his backup, Jevan Snead, is no longer with the team. Snead was granted a release to transfer Friday.

Davis said he would not remove the redshirt from freshman Sherrod Harris, the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster, if McCoy can't start. Davis said walk-on quarterback Matt McCoy would be available for the game.

Wide receivers Quan Cosby and Billy Pittman were quarterbacks in high school, and Pittman was a scout team quarterback for Texas practices in 2004.

"We don't think we'll need an emergency quarterback," Davis said. "But we'll certainly have a third guy ready."

As for Colt McCoy, Davis said: "He has made great progress to this point. We have quite a bit of time."

Better hope for Colt McCoy.

Cosby & Pittman were fine hs qbs & athletes, but now they are both WRs for a reason.

I would go with Quan. Better arm than Pittman, plus a little more height. Pittman's moire valuable as a WR, Cosby's more valuable as a QB/jack-of-all-trades.

My bad. I always thought Quan was 6-1 and Billy was 5-10.

I still say go with Quan. Got to see him play a couple of times in HS and he definitely had a college-caliber arm. Maybe not a Big XII-caliber arm, but a college-caliber arm.

I saw Pittman beat Sweeny when he was a sophomore in the playoffs. Cosby put up some sick hs #s at Mart too. Cosby was the better qb in hs to answer your question.

Still say you better hope McCoy can play & last the whole game! Those guys are WRs now for a reason & have not played qb in years.

If by productive you mean 32 straight wins, I'll take "Who is Quan" for $800.

Didn't his streak get ended by Celina and their run of like a rediculous number?

Yeah, if I remember correctly it was their 40th straight game. I was at that game and the game before that where Refugio had Mart backed into a corner until the final minute. There were nine future D-I signees on the field in that 2A Semifinal game and a couple more who should've but didn't for various reasons.

I saw Quan play quarterback in high school, and from what i remember he was pretty darn good. Pittman is good, but Quan is a better receiver and athlete in general, and probably a better qb

Mart had a 30 game win-streak end in the 2000 state championship, not 32. They were 15-0 in 1999 and 15-1 in 2000. Celina's winning streak was 40 prior to the game.

Still the best game (all things considered) i have ever seen at the high school level. (18,000+ fans for a 2A game)

If Quan or Pittman take any snaps it could be something interesting to see. I smell a lot of zone read and some option out of the shotgun. Whoever plays at QB. I expect us to run about 70% of the time if not more. I would say we will win on the fact that we are better on paper and have more talent at every position. but we have lost to consecutive teams that arent as good as us on paper so therefore I don't know what to expect.

Crazy. I have an old newspaper clipping that says 32-game streak, but they would've had to win their last game in 1998 to do that so 30 makes sense.

I am a BP fan and I would love to see him at the QB position one more time. However over the last two years, he has been very hesitant to run with the ball in traffic. When he catches a ball on the sideline he can be electric but when he catches a ball over the middle, he has a tendency to lay down. He catches the ball fine but he doesn't appear to want the hard contact that a middle of the field receiver gets. I don't know if this is because of the injuries he has had (knee from an over the middle catch against USC for example) or if he is afraid of fumbling.

Anyway, he was a heck of an athlete playing QB for 4 years in HS and I think he could handle it. As the scout team QB, I heard that the 1st team defense could not stop him.

I said Quan cause once in warmups at Mart he was throwing it over 70 yards.

I would say that is Big 12 arm strength.

Neither one. Colt is going to be healthy and have a great game. (I hope)
