Owls blast Bulldogs out of playoffs

SAN ANTONIO - Orange Grove made it this far in the playoffs by the way its players handled adversity.

That experience didn't help Saturday against Hondo.

Quarterback Elliott Hackebeil passed for 256 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two others to lead the Owls past the Bulldogs 40-3 in a Class 3A Division II regional semifinal at the Alamodome. Hondo improved to 12-0 and takes on Wimberley next week for the Region IV championship.

"They're a good team, no doubt," said Orange Grove coach Brent Kornegay, whose team closed the season at 11-2. "Our kids fought to the bitter end. We just ran into a better team."

Hondo made it evident from the start, driving 72 yards on only three plays to take the lead.

On the first play from scrimmage, Hackebeil double pumped before throwing to a streaking Zach Stansbury. The senior came up with a 46-yard catch despite a pass interference penalty on the Bulldogs.

After running back Andy Werner picked up eight yards on first down, Hackebeil took off around the right side and went untouched 18 yards to the end zone. Werner kicked the extra point to give Hondo a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the first quarter.

The situation continued to deteriorate for the Bulldogs.

Two-way standout Israel Ochoa was called for a personal foul and ejected from the game three plays into Orange Grove's first possession. Officials then tossed lineman Daniel York on the first play of the next series, but the Bulldogs managed to regroup and drive inside the Hondo 20-yard line.

Orange Grove settled for a 34-yard field goal by Moses Aguilar, which cut the deficit to 7-3 with 7 minutes, 40 seconds left in the second quarter. That turned out to be all the Bulldogs could muster.

Hondo went on to score 33 unanswered points, including 13 in final 2:33 of the first half - both scores set up by turnovers.

The first came after Ronnie Knowles intercepted quarterback Paul Duarte at the Orange Grove 15. Hackebeil broke free for 34 yards on first down, to which officials added 15 after Aguilar hit the senior out of bounds.

Werner scored from two yards out five plays later, but missed the extra point to leave Hondo in front 13-3. The Owls weren't done just yet, however.

Punter Kevin Gonzalez fumbled the snap on fourth and nine from the Orange Grove 21, causing a mad dash for the ball. Knowles recovered for the Owls at the 2, setting up another short touchdown by Werner with 53 seconds left before halftime.

Werner finished with 19 carries for 103 yards, followed by Hackebeil with 83. Through the air, Hackebeil went 12 of 18 for 256 yards.
