VICTORIA — Ingleside defensive coordinator Jake Wachsmuth approached Pleasanton's Niko Salinas as the two walked off the field Saturday night.

"You're the hardest player we've had to tackle all year," Wachsmuth told the Eagles quarterback.

Despite Salinas barreling over Ingleside defenders for most of the game, the Mustangs defeated Pleasanton 28-14 in the Class 3A Division I regional final before a crowd of nearly 5,500 at Memorial Stadium.

Pleasanton (7-6) took a 7-0 lead on its opening possession but didn't score again until Phillip Pawelek's 43-yard TD run with six seconds left to play.

Ingleside (12-1) will face Waco Robinson in the state semifinals next week. The Mustangs sacked Salinas three times in the fourth quarter to prevent a comeback bid.

"It was a great feeling to get ahead early," said Salinas, who carried 35 times for 155 yards and one touchdown and completed 13 of 21 passes and 108 yards. "Then they scored one and then they scored another. It took the excitement down.

"We had our chances. We just didn't take advantage of them."

Ingleside, which led 21-7 at the half, scored 28 unanswered points after trailing 7-0.

The Mustangs opened the game aggressively, as quarterback Josh Coffield led a vertical passing attack that gave the Eagles' defense problems.

Coffield, who threw deep on his first five attempts, connected on a 46-yard TD strike to Joel Johnson moments before hitting a 33-yard pass to Scott Holder that set up another score.

Coffield injured his ankle near the end of the first quarter and played sparingly in the second half. But the Mustangs' offense didn't miss a beat with backup RJ Endsley in the game.

Forced to keep pace with Ingleside's quick-strike offense, Pleasanton coach Tab Dumont attempted six fourth-down conversions, but only two were successful.

Pleasanton's offense never recovered after a time-consuming drive to start the second half fell short when Salinas misfired on fourth-and-4 from the Ingleside 29.

"We moved it up and down the field in between the 20s," Dumont said. "But when we got to the red zone, we couldn't get it in the end zone.

"That was the difference in the game."
