Ingleside is having so much fun right now, the players and coaching staff can hardly wait to get back on the field.

In fact, the Mustangs could probably go without the extra day of preparation.

"We're pumped up and ready to get back out there," said coach Graig Hesseltine, whose team plays Pleasanton for the Region IV-3A Division I championship Saturday night at Victoria's Memorial Stadium.

"In the playoffs the weeks don't go by fast enough," he said. "We're anxiously awaiting our next opponent."

That's not surprising considering Ingleside's current run.

The Mustangs have won nine straight games since losing to Port Lavaca 41-16 three games into the season. After rolling undefeated to its first district championship since 1995, the team vanquished Gonzales 31-22 and La Feria 31-28 to open the playoffs.

Despite all the victories, Hesseltine wants to see the Mustangs accomplish one thing.

"Being more consistent," he said. "We haven't done that the last two games. We haven't played a full game and keep having too many letdowns on both sides of the ball. Consistency is what you strive for this time of year. If not, you're not going to beat good football teams."

Hesseltine isn't sure what the problem is, but knows what the Mustangs are capable of.

"I don't know if it's because we're playing better teams or because of all the excitement that surrounds a playoff game," he said. "The kids eventually get used to playing in that type of atmosphere. They just need to relax and do what they're coached to do. If we do that we're pretty dang good."

Last week, it took a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Josh Coffield to push Ingleside past La Feria. However, the score might not have been as close if running back Zach Adams didn't hurt his ankle.

Injured early in the second quarter, Adams continued playing, but at less than full speed. Coffield went on to rush for 180 yards on 27 carries while also passing for 110 yards and two scores.

Adams is expected to be ready for Saturday's game, but Hesseltine takes comfort in his team's ability to hold together in times of adversity.

"The staff talked about that just the other day," he said. "All of the injuries we've gone through having to rotate players around, no doubt that's helped."
