This is how I imagine this one would play out...

Texas Stadium…December 8, 2006…7:30PM. 10,000 people…one side of the stadium in purple and gold while the other wears their preferred orange and black. The captains for Wylie and Gilmer meet on “The Star” for the coin toss. Gilmer, the wearing their away white unis, calls heads. However…somebody forgot to tell them that tails never fails and Wylie, dressed from head to toe in purple apparel, wins the toss and elects to receive.

At 7:36 PM, the ball is teed up and the game is under way. The Bulldogs return the opening kick to their 23 where the return man is met by 3 Buckeyes and promptly taken down. Gary Edwards brings the Bulldogs to the line and in patented Hugh Sandifer fashion, he leads the team on a methodical 11-play 77 yard touchdown drive.

Wylie 7 Gilmer 0

7:43 left in the 1st quarter

Gilmer’s firepower is on display immediately as future Texas Longhorn Curtis Brown returns the Wylie kick 33 yards to the Buckeye 46. Two 12 yd runs by Justin Johnson and the Buckeyes are on the move and down to the Wylie 30. Kinne fakes the handoff to Brown and rolls right hitting Lamar Harris on a deep comeback along the sidelines for 22 yards and 1st and goal at the Wylie 8. After an incomplete pass on 1st and a Johnson toss play is stretched out of bounds for a 1 yard gain on 2nd, Kinne finds Jamell Kennedy on a quick slant for a 7 yd catch and the Gilmer TD. The PAT is good and the score now reads:

Wylie 7 Gilmer 7

4:58 left in the 1st quarter

Not wanting to get into a shootout with the high octane offense of the Buckeyes, it is clear that Coach Sandifer plans to use his coaching experience and his teams’ biggest asset, their ability to adjust their gameplan to fit their opponent, to his advantage. Wylie is using a good mix of runs, both inside and outside, along with short, safe passing routes to control the clock and keep the Gilmer offense off the field. The Bulldogs start the drive at their own 28 and chew up 7 minutes off the clock before setting for a Bryce Channel field goal from 32 yards out.

Wylie 10 Gilmer 7

9:39 left in the 2nd quarter

This time on the kickoff the Bulldogs do a much better job and limit Johnson to a 12 yard return which leaves Kinne and company to start their drive at their own 25. On the first play, Kinne finds nobody open and scrambles for 4 yards. A dropped slant to Thompson and a 10 yd catch and run by Johnson nets the Buckeyes a 1st down at their 39 yard line. However, on 2nd down, Johnson can’t hold onto the pitch from Kinne and Wylie recovers at the Gilmer 36. On the very next play, Sandifer pulls out his bag of tricks with Edwards throwing a WR screen to Cameron Rogers and then going deep to catch a pass for the Wylie touchdown. Wait…there is a flag on the play and the Bulldogs are called for holding as a receiver grabbed a little too much jersey while trying to Rogers time to get set to throw to Edwards. On 2nd and 20, Edwards spins, hops, and runs for 27 yards down to the Buckeye 19. Again, the Buckeye defense comes up with a stop in the redzone and Wylie can only muster a 33 yard Channel field goal.

Wylie 13 Gilmer 7

5:44 left in the 2nd quarter

Gilmer starts the drive at their own 32 and Kinne shows why he is widely considered the top QB in 3A and one of the best recruits in the state as he goes 6 of 6 through the air for 62 yards and rushes the final 6 yards on an option keeper for the Buckeye touchdown. The kick is up and good and the scoreboard now reads:

Wylie 13Gilmer 13

2:20 left in the 2nd quarter

Wylie starts the drive at their own 18 but isn’t able to do too much with it and punts away to Gilmer with :8 seconds left on the clock. With a 1st and 10 at their own 18, the Buckeyes choose to take a knee and head to the locker room up 14-13.

Well you're at 28 with 8 minutes left in the 3rd...so you should be close.

Wait...you only had 36 vs TL-E! ;)

I still haven't decided on an ending so we'll see where my brain takes me...

2nd Half

Wylie kicks off to Gilmer to start the 2nd half and it doesn’t take long for the Buckeyes to reach paydirt as Kinne leads them on a 6-play 64 yard drive highlighted by a 31 yard strike across the middle to Curtis Brown on the 1st play of the half and capped off by a 2 yard Justin Johnson run. In a risky play call, Kinne finds Lamar Harris in the far corner of the endzone for the 2 point conversion.

Wylie 13 Gilmer 22

9:35 left in the 3rd Quarter

Feeling the need to make a big play, Sandifer sneaks in Gary Edwards as an upback on the kick return. The kick is fielded at the 10 and Edwards takes the ball from the receiver on a reverse at the 14. He is making a sprint for the corner on the far sideline and just as he reaches it at the 28 a Gilmer defender dives in and punches the ball out. The Buckeyes pick it up and 22 yards later they’re in the endzone as half 5,000+ Gilmer fans are on their feet and filled with jubilation. XP is no good…but the rout is on…

Wylie 13 Gilmer 28

9:14 left in the 3rd Quarter

Evidently somebody forgot to tell Coach Sandifer that when a trick play backfires on you the 1st time…you probably shouldn’t come out and try it again on the next kickoff. Doesn’t matter…same thing happens…Edwards takes the ball at the 15 on a reverse and reaches the corner at the 30 yard line. However, this time he finds a wide open field once he hits that corner and nobody in Texas Stadium is going to catch him. Gary Edwards…85 yard kick return for a score…strike up the band, throw some purple confetti in the air, the Wylie Bulldogs aren’t dead yet. Sandifer elects to go for 1…it’s up and it’s good. Hold on to your seats boys and girls cuz there is a lot of football left to be played…

Wylie 20 Gilmer 28

8:55 left in the 3rd Quarter

With the momentum now swung solidly in the Bulldogs favor, they hold the Buckeyes to a quick 3 and out (two runs that net the Buckeyes 3 yards and a great play by a Wylie DB to knock down a deep pass on 3rd down) and after a fair catch will take over at their own 38 with 6:23 left in the 3rd quarter.

The momentum isn’t slowing down for the boys in purple as they again chew up over 6 minutes of clock and this time the 3rd quarter ends with Wylie having a 2nd goal at the Gilmer 4 as we get ready for the final quarter of play.

Hurry up, I have an appt in a few minutes. What happened???

It doesn’t take long for the Gary Edwards to find the endzone again as he finds his favorite target Matt Smith in the endzone for a 4 yard touchdown and then again on what looks like the same play action pass (has Sandifer lost his mind tonight???) for a 2-point conversion.

Wylie 28 Gilmer 28

11:54 left in the 4th Quarter

Kinne and company take over on their own 27 yard line and the “eye of the buck” (pardon the pun) is back and better than ever. It doesn’t take long…but it’s exciting to watch. On 1st down Johnson goes 18 yards on a draw play out to the 45. On the next play, Coach Tedford shows he has a few tricks up his sleeve as well and Curtis Brown goes 55 yards on a reverse for what appears to be a Gilmer touchdown. However, replay officials (this is MY dream after all ;)) determine that he stepped out of bounds at the Bulldog 28 while juking out a would be Wylie defender and the ball is brought back to the 28…1st and 10 Buckeyes with the clock showing 10 minutes. Have no fear for the GJ Kinne show is still here. 48 seconds and 2 passes later, Kinne finds a streaking Jamell Kennedy for an 18 yard touchdown to put the Buckeyes back on top…

Wylie 28 Gilmer 35

9:12 left in the 4th Quarter

Knowing this might be their last chance to control the clock, the Bulldogs do exactly that by marching 42 yards in 8 plays down to the Buckeye 20. Facing a 3rd and 6, Edwards fakes the handoff to Felts and rolls to his right looking for Matt Smith. All of a sudden, Edwards stops and throws back across the field to Felts, who has slipped out into the left flat with a blocker and no defenders in between him and the endzone. Felts makes the grab at the 18 and scampers the rest of the way for a Bulldog touchdown. The kick is away…no flags on the play…

The Buckeyes will again start with great field position as they have the ball at their own 36 with 2:15 on the clock and the outcome under their control. Kinne comes out firing and completes 3 of his first 4 passes and the Buckeyes are down to the Wylie 22 with just over a minute remaining. First down…Johnson tries the right side but is met by LB Jacob Jennings at the line of scrimmage.

:56 seconds remaining…Kinne throws a WR screen to Curtis Brown but he is knocked out of bounds after a 4 yard gain.

:48 seconds remaining…on third down Kinne rolls right looking for a receiver but the Wylie secondary is excellent in coverage and Kinne is run brought down at the 15 yard line with the clock showing :39 seconds.

TIMEOUT WYLIE

Facing a 4th and 3…the Buckeyes trot out Matt Burgin to attempt a 32 yard FG and pray that his leg can give them a trip to the state championship game. Good snap…good hold…and the kick bounces off the right upright and falls into the endzone. No good…:34 seconds remaining in the game.

While one would think that :34 seconds sounds like just enough time for the Bulldogs to pull off another last second miracle with a field goal…this time it just wasn’t in the cards as the Bulldogs can’t get past midfield before the clock expires and we’re heading to overtime.

I thought the ball couldn't be advanced on a kickoff if recovered. Does that only apply to onside kicks?

I know that once the receiving team has possessed the kick that any fumble is a live ball and may be returned until the play ends by downing the man with the ball or a touchdown.
