Who are some of the teams that you have seen play with great speed on defense?

Gainesville had great speed last year.

Burnet has Great speed on both sides of the ball. Probably have the fastest MLB in the State. Watch for Ty Kuhn.

Fairfield had one of the premier defenses in not only Central Texas but the state last year and return 7 starters from that defense. Solid up front w/ quick linebackers that can cover a lot of ground and led by Brian Evans in the secondary. They are definitely quick and to be watched.

Would you guys agree that you put your fastest kids on defense even if you give up some size to your opponents offense?

In a way I do, in a way I don't...

I remember in the late 90's Sealy had a buck-65 nose-guard (and I think I might have overrated his size)... He might have gotten blown off of the line a couple of times but if he could suck you up quick and if not blocked well enough he could chase your QB down...

Definitely Burnet. They were the only team we played all last year that could match and in some cases beat Jasper's speed.

Marlin had one of the fastest defenses I've ever seen last year. There was no such thing as getting to the corner, and if a ball was left in the air too long, it resulted in a pick or a dead receiver. I expect them to field a similar, if not faster D this year.

Atlanta always has alot of speed on defense. I guess alot of that comes from the awsome track program they have.

I don't know about the Burnet MLB but I know Ryan Bradford is ours. As I've said before, he's 6'2", 220-225 and runs in the 4.3's. If the Burnet guy is faster than that, he's good.

Wow, a 225 lber that clocks a 4.3! He could really hang you out to dry couldn't he? Burnet's Ty Kuhn runs a 4.4 a weighs in arund 200. It's amazing how much speed some of these young men have nowadays.

I know, I couldn't do a 4.4 40 if I was going downhill in a BMW.

What about in a 83' Ford pickup? :p

Gainesville is mainly built around speed..
but besides us,
Atlanta was the fastest team we played last year..

Ok, lacking mind reading powers here, I'm gonna assume the "ha" was for how fast Ryan is. Guess I'll say the same thing I told OC, come buy a ticket and watch. He's not in Campbell's top 300 from an unranked school for his looks. (maybe he is, he does press almost 400, but that probably has a "ha" coming for it, too). LOL

Doesnt Michael Vick run a 4.3 40? When he's healthy.

I heard them say Vick has run in the 4.2's. I guess this really makes people upset when numbers are thrown around. The only thing I know is that it's listed in the locker room from spring workouts that Lagway ran 4.26 and Bradford was 4.3 something. I don't think they would post it for their guys to mislead them.

Maybe OC is right, maybe it's a bad timer, who knows? I do know this, I also said our QB last year ran a 4.3 and when he went to that Hawaii all star game this past summer they posted him running a 4.3 there on the internet, so at least it wasn't just timed here that way.

I know when Rocket Ismael was at Notre Dame his combine time was under 4.2 once. And that was also Deion Sanders time once. Maybe it's less, maybe more. I know it's enough for Lagway to have gotten Ohio State and Oklahoma offers from an unranked team, so if it's 4.2 or 4.4, it's still fast.

Too much is made of that anyway, the difference between 4.3 and 4.4 is less than one arms length, so one could tackle the other. Track is the only sport that individual differences that small matter, football is still a team sport.

True trojandad. Too much is made of speed. It certainly helps, but that's not the determining factor in a football game. Jasper has won several track championships in the past, yet that had netted them zero football championships.

Quick starts make for fast defenses--not too many on defense are running 40 yards, and if they are, they are in trouble. Look up their shuttle times, that will give you a better idea of speed on defense.

I know alot of people that went to the game last week that Caldwell played said our defense was GREAT but offense needed work. I myself have not seen our guys play but Ill take the word from my classmates and the town!

BrahmaMom....i agree with you completely, its not always a 40 yard sprint...theres back-peddling, running one way while lookin the other, the WHOLE 9 yards, so 40's can sometimes mislead

Smart woman, and those are few and far between.JK Kudos to BrahmaMom for the good analysis on defensive speed. :)

If u ask me, 40 yard dashes are over rated. Real speed is measure in the 100 yard dash. 40's only show how fast someone can take off not speed. At least thats my opinion.

Speed is fantastic, but the ability to accelerate after letting the DB "think" he is keeping up is great! Having that second gear is a wonderful God given ability.

I seem to remember Everman having a little bit of speed the last couple of years...LOL Burnet last year was every bit as fast as Everman...

Let's not forget the ability to change directions on demand. How many times have we seen someone running full speed, stop on a dime, and then change directions. As a defender, you can really look foolish when coming into contact (or lack there of) with guys that can do that.

"Ben Johnson, the fastest man the world has ever known, steroids or no steroids, ran a 9.79 in the 100-meter dash at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul," said Bill Buchalter, a longtime track writer for the Orlando Sentinel. "The Swiss Omega Timer, the finest time system in the world, broke it down by meters, and at 40 meters, Ben Johnson ran 4.69. Of course, that was for 40 meters, but a slide-rule expert told me it's a difference of about three feet, so that probably equates to 40 yards at about 4.39 or round it off to a 4.4.

"So the fastest man in the world, when he ran the world record, ran a 4.4 in the 40. Yet, every football player in America runs in the 4.3s. Amazing, isn't it?"

Chris: Thanks for the compliment. It means a lot since not too long ago I was the mom in the stands asking if we were on offense or defense. I found out when my son was a freshman what the chains were for, and thought they were calling him "Mike" b/c his middle name was Michael. I have learned a lot about the game through the years and developed a passion for it, despite his serious injuries and two surgeries. Since I live with five males, football is life, the rest is just details.
