Wylie speedster Gary Edwards changed positions during his football career like most players change socks. This season, he stepped into arguably the toughest position on the field: quarterback.

Consider it another position conquered.

Edwards was named co-Most Valuable Player on the All-District 7-3A team, which was released Monday. Edwards shared the honor with Sweetwater senior running back Joseph Banyard.

After excelling at defensive back, kick returner, punt returner, running back and wide receiver, Edwards the quarterback surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in both rushing (1,137 yards) and passing (1,379 yards) in 2006. He ran for a team-best 15 touchdowns and threw for 15 more as Wylie went undefeated in 7-3A and advanced to the regional round of the Class 3A Division I playoffs.

''He's a very gifted athlete, but he worked very hard at becoming a very gifted quarterback,'' Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said of Edwards. ''So many coaches expected to see a running back playing quarterback, and he wasn't. He was a quarterback, and as he grew to understand the position and progressed and got better, everyone else on the team did as well. He was a big leader for us.''

Banyard was a big playmaker for Sweetwater as well, rushing for 1,098 yards and 20 touchdowns in the regular season. The Mustangs' two-way standout also had 117 tackles and two interceptions at linebacker.

Wylie senior linebacker Josh Jennings earned Defensive MVP honors after registering a team-best 108 tackles in the regular season, including 12 tackles for loss. Jennings caused four fumbles, returning one for a touchdown.

Offensive MVP honors went to junior running back Curtis Kevil of Clyde. Kevil was the engine that drove the Bulldogs to their first playoff berth in a decade by rushing for 1,231 yards and 14 touchdowns in the regular season. Kevil averaged 22.3 carries per game for Clyde.

Breckenridge junior quarterback Blaine Vick was named the district's top utility player. He rushed for 1,171 yards and passed for 623 more, accounting for 16 Buckaroo touchdowns in the process.

Sandifer was chosen as Coach of the Year after taking a Wylie team with only one starter returning at the same position (tight end Matt Smith) and driving them to the program's eighth consecutive district championship.

Sweetwater led all teams with 13 first-team selections, followed by Wylie with 12.
